Hi all, I am thinking about a new series of terrain projects and was looking at HOTT strongholds.I don't currently play Hott as I am liking the game mechanics of LOTR strategy battle game, but I am big on terrain projects and I thought I would get together some Strongholds mounted in 12" by 12" mdf boards for my forces.Question is what to make the Strongholds?I mainly play LOTR but am branching out. Orc-horrible stockade with "trophies." stuck on poles.Maybe a watchtower.Alternively a metal clad gate and towers. Goblin-Cave entrance with "trophies." Dwarf-Mountain gate. Wood Elf-Trees with flets/elven hall in hill sides with bridge. High Elf-Elf ships on a shore/Elf towers. Rohan-Stockage with watch towers. Gondor-City walls/ruined city. Lizard-Jungle ziggurat. Undead-Necropolis-Grecian temple/Dead City Moorcock Inspired-Corum-Adobe Village/Fort Frozen City Stone Circle Question to you guys is what would float your boat? Any wild and wacky suggestions, to fit on a 12" by 12" base in 25/28mm. |

I thought that 12" x 12" was too big for a 25mm Stronghold in HoTT? |

Isn't 12" roughly 60 feet in groundscale? 60' square makes for a small castle
maybe a fortified manor house? |

Robert, I think you are right, but I can "terrain" the rest of the board ie if a stronghold is 12" by 6" the other 6" can be open ground. But I'm not playing Hott, just want to make some cool Strongholds. |

I'm thinking giant albino penguins wandering around a structure that is basically a rugose cone in the Antarctic (OK, the rugose cone was a description of a creature, but would look good. And rugose means wrinkled, before anyone asks – I looked that one up years ago). |

These guys look evil. picture And while waiting for your opponent to move, you can balance your penguins. Thanks Garrison. You can't get more rugose than these chaps. What a cute stronghold:) picture |

If I was any good at making scenery which sadly i'm not, i'd go for the; "Wood Elf-Trees with flets" option. Loads of opportunity to add extra character with animals plants etc and modelling loads of vantage points for your miniatures. Good luck Chris |

Hi Kropotkin303 I am working on a few strongholds for HOTT, but in 15mm. Some I am doing to be specific, ( an old plastic box mounted on a dvd with a little sand and a few figures added will become an undead barrow), some will be more generic, a dark age style rampart that will do anyone that doesnt have their own stronghold yet. Sometimes figures from other scales can be used, I used small 25mm dinosaurs for a reptileman camp, and 25mm GW templedogs were painted stone grey and are part of my chinesse camp. I have a 25mm entwife which with a few trees will be the camp for my woodelves. Fot LOTR, some of the races can use their historical counterparts ( wainriders could use celtic roundhouses etc, saxon tents for rohan etc) and on others any scene from the books or fils could inspire you. Big black tower for saruman, Blasted burned watll for rohan, door in mountain for dwarves, link link These 2 sites are very good and might offer inspiration, Phil |

Thanks Kreoseus, Very inspiring stuff and I hope your Strongholds work well. This is from the 2nd edition I believe. "A stronghold must fit inside an imaginary rectangle of 600p maximum length and width, and must itself be at least 200p in length and width." In the 25-28mm scale the suggested equivalent to 100p is 40mm, so a stronghold could span between 240mm and 80mm in length and width. That's plenty of ground to work on. |
