Got mine this morning, and the big Heelander. Looks lovely, cant wait to lunchtime to give it a read!

Got mine as well trouble is to many lovely pics that distract you from trying to read the book. The Crimean pics look really good and with the free figure makes you wonder why apart from Foundry (and Brittania) does nobody do a decent Crimean range in 28mm.

Bloody hell Royal Mail actually working … got mine too :)

I didn't pre-order, as the period covered is not my main interest, but as I am always on the look out for good rules, I would be interested in hearing your feedback.

Hasn't arrived for me in Australia yet, but I'm sure it's on the way.

I was a touch disheartened by the excellent interview Rick gave in a magazine recently as it seems you really need a big space to play the game as intended, but as with all these things, I'm sure I can just adjust the measurements to suit my meager resources. And besides, not every ruleset must conform to my setup! :)

From all accounts, it's a pretty book so I can't wait to have a read through.

Just sitting down with cuppa and the book …
Although aimed at 28mm and a huge table (12-14 by 6)the way the units and measures are presented is going to make it easy to down scale by the looks. Convert to cm for 15mm and already am looking at 150cm by 75 looking good :-)
Now who makes 15mm zulus :-)

That's good to hear!

I'm thinking of using some of the excellent 20mm plastics I've collected over the years. You've just reminded me Surferdude! I have 20mm Zulus and Colonial British! Bloody nice models, too.

"Now who makes 15mm zulus"

In the past, I've painter hundreds of Old Golry Zulus (and Brits, and Natal Native Contingent, and Natal Mounted Police and ….)

The quantity and quality for the price is hard to beat if you're looking to put a lot of troops on the table quickly.

I'm awaiting my copy here in the US.

I'm interested in taking a look at these, but I have to admit that the write up by Rick Priestly (on Warlord Games' site warlordgames.co.uk/?p=136) put me off as being somewhat elitist.

Huge units, huge tables, not deigning to descend into the grubbiness of points systems, aimed squarely at the "Gentleman Wargamer."

Of course, I know he's just trying to warn people off who expect something different and I admit this is jealousy on my part becaues I don't have the space to put up a permanent 14' x 6' table or the luxury of thousands of beautifully painted 28mm figures. But I was wondering if anyone else came away with the impression that "riff raff need not apply"?

mweaver28 Oct 2009 7:06 a.m. PST

Good news. Hopefully mine will arrive here in the States in a week or so.

Pictors Studio28 Oct 2009 7:09 a.m. PST

I'm looking to pick up a copy at fall in. Maybe I'll read it really quickly and use it to run the Carlist War demo game I'm going to have in front of my booth. We shall see when I get there.

Bede … I imagine (esp after reading it this morning) is that it is all a bit 'tongue in cheek' …

battleeditor28 Oct 2009 7:28 a.m. PST

Bede -- having met Rick a few times now, I can confirm Surferdude's judgement that it is very much tongue in cheek.

I've played the rules. They're fun. You can also adapt them to other scales of miniatures, or use fewer miniatures per base if you prefer. Rick and his Nottingham chums just like to trot out their collections and cram the table with miniatures as their preferred approach, a 'moving diorama' if you will -- there is no diktat that you must do likewise.

Love to hear a quick round up of a game turn before i order a set…

IE/ Movment..? inches based on dice roll..?

and a round of shooitng and wounds etc, i know you do not remove wounded, just use markers but like to know more about that.
Thanks
Alan-Norfolk

Movement – can be rapid … you order your troops (let your opponent know what you are trying to get them to do) and then make a command roll to see how well they do it … basically they will get 1-3 actions (2 being the norm by the looks)depending on how you roll (situational modifiers are present of course) and then off they go – as infantry can move 12" as a base you could be looking at 36" move – now those tables don't look quite as BIG!

Hits are caused and if the morale test isn't made (read save throw) they take a wound which effects the unit invarious ways – they can take so many (normally 3) wounds/stamina points before they get shaken and start being not as good :-)

If you have played warmaster than the mechanics will have a familiar 'feel' – they are not the same but as a warmaster player I certainly feel 'at home' with the read through – dunno how it will be for players who are not.

Order – move- side shoots – everyone melees and then the other chap does the same (there are of course spanners to be thrown in the works) – more later when we have had a game :-)

All in all though I am excited about them – never going to play in 28mm but in 15mm in cm instead of inches on a 4x3 or 6x4 it looks like a lot of fun to be had!

ACW, AWI and zulu stuff at the ready Sahhhhhh!

Thanks rich for the quick reply, know i know that " Morale " means save for hit..!! Thanks.

What does the Stamina ability do..?

As for hits is that 3 hits per base or 3 hits per complete unit, i guess its 3 per total hit ? and do you remove any bases from the unit with hits or does the unit stay together until the end..?

Many thanks Rich
Alan

Surferdude28 Oct 2009 12:18 p.m. PST

Only going on a read through so don't quote me in front of Rick :)

Stamina shows 'how many casualties it can take before it becomes shaken' – so therefore its really hits and most units have 3 or 4 – I think it may be possible to get them back with a rally order.

Its hits per unit – and most shooting is 3 dice basically hitting on a 4+ saving/morale on a 4+ (with modifiers etc)so they will hang around a while. AFAIK the unit stays together til it breaks and gets taken off.

Trajanus28 Oct 2009 4:25 p.m. PST

Surferdude,

Probably not a fair question at this point in ownership but how do you think the rules will hold up in showing the differences between say, Marlborough – SYW – AWI – Napoleonic and ACW?

As I play three out of five of those I'd be a bit hacked off to buy the book and find I'm playing the same game three times!
