I cant remember the title or author but I had this book in the early eighties and it was probably written earlier. No pictures but it covered organization of everything with a lot of short historical examples to back everything up. It had sections on railroads, signals, supply etc as well as the basic branches of service and the tactics etc…

It was a short hardcover book like Featherstone's tank battles in miniature. It was very easy to read but definitely by a wargamer for wargamers.

ANy thoughts?

I don't know but I'd like one too!

Two come to mind, but there are certainly more. 1-"The Confederates & Federals at War" published in England in 1975 by Col H. C. B. Rogers (ISBN:0-88254-350-4). Eleven chapters including Infantry, Artillery, Engineers and Signal, Railways, Medical, Naval Operations. Well footnoted and it is well illustrated. 2-"Battle Tactics of the Civil War" published in 1987 by Paddy Griffith (ISBN: 0-300-04247-7) with line drawings. Both worthy of having in your library and Paddy always good for heated discussions.

Yep. Those two came to mind. Both are good for a nuts and bolts background to The late Unpleasantness.

CWBUFF,

This could be the very book. I will buy it and let you know. This would be a great piece of deductive reasoning on your part!
