Can anyone suggest a good battle as a starter scenario for novice ACW gamers, especially if it is available online.

Thanks
Graham

What level of game are you looking for?
Do you have any particular rules in mind?

South Mountain can be a good scenario. Interesting situation, not too big. But scale and rules definitely matter…

Jacksons Valley Campaign, not sure if its online.

Go to the Junior General website, they have a nice scenario from Gettysburg and have paper soldiers you can print out to get gaming without having to get miniatures purchased, painted and mounted.

What scale- as in what does one unit represent?

The one from Mr Lincoln's War is a good one- do you want to drop round and borrow it? How about modifying the FPW one?

Ball's Bluff is about as basic as they come. You can construct a scenario from the staff ride at this website:

There are some nice scenarios available free on the GHQ website:

They are designed for use with GHQ's own rule set but I would have thought would be fairly easy to convert to other systems where the regiment/squadron/battery is the basic unit of manoeuvre. Most of the scenarios feature between two and five brigades per side, which works out at around 8 to 20 regiments of infantry and one or two batteries of artillery.

I have some Civil War scenarios on my CHARGE! blog; they are for regimental rules such as Johnny Reb 3. A couple of the simpler ones might be useful for a novice ACW gamer to try out.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The Bleeped text poured beer down my throat until my grip on various scenario books/rules etc slackened.

Logan's Cross Roads is a nifty battle, about 1 brigade per side. There are a lot of nice small battles particularly in 1861 and early 1862, and in the Trans-Mississippian theater throughout the war. Small battles have a particular charm, lot's more mobile and fragile than the big famous battles.
