Heard this mentioned on the Radio Bristol news this morning. Wouldn't like to go swimming with one of these around!!

Pliosaurs are not dinosaurs.

Oh, poo. It's pedants like you who claim Pluto isn't a planet either.

nycjadie27 Oct 2009 6:52 a.m. PST

That's not a pliosaur, that's a living submarine.

Yep. There was a Science Channel show on the team that went to Spitzbergen and their awesome discoveries. Aside from the fossil critters I was bemused by the fact that all the expedition had to qualify with a rifle and carry it with them at all times, even to go potty, as the modern critters, polar bears, would cheerfully eat them!

And this ties in with gaming, how? Let's see…

"Teeth, Mr. Rico! Millions of 'em!"
No…

"Also unearthed nearby were fossilized signs in a pliosaur's handwriting, stating that GW is overpriced and FoW is too simplistic."
No…

"What paint should I use for the bricoles of Napoleon's Very Old Guard pliosaurs?"
Not quite…

"Mesozoic Miniatures announces it will release a 15mm pliosaur next spring."
"I've got no use for one, but it looks great."
"Too bad I already spent all my money at IskCon."
"The fools! It would sell better in 28mm!"
Yeah, there we go.

I am sure it would add spice to any dinosaur hunt game or added peril in the lake on Kong Island!

Seems pretty relevant/inspirational to Prehistoric, Pulp and VSF, which is why I posted there. If I'd posted to 18thC and Ancients as well you might have a point.
And if it's not a dinosaur feel free to educate me as to its actual nomenclature rather than just disagreeing.
And Pluto is a planet, 2000 was the Millennium and whales are fish, so there.

Sheesh. Long day at work.

It seems to be over-hyped a bit. Male sperm whales grow to be 16 to 18 meters long. Any new discovery is exciting, but the build up on this one seems to be geared toward selling autos and hygene products on the Discovery Channel, rather than the merit the find deserves. If the ratio in the upper artwork is to be believed, the prey the pliosaur pursues is less than 4 meters long. By way of contrast, an average male saltwater crocodile is 5 meters long, with some examples reaching 7 meters.

Gives me ideas for a futuristic "dinosaur" vs submarine game with a few of those things in it.
