I'm currently looking for a new project, and the Incas seem to repeatedly catch my eye. I'm reading up, and browsing 28mm ranges, but I thought I'd ask for some advice. I like small projects that I can complete pretty quickly, but come back and add to later. So, I'm looking at buying not more than 100 minis. So, how best to carve up that magic hundred in terms of balancing Incas and Conquistadors? And, can anyone recommend a good system for games with this number of minis? Thanks. |

I've read that as few as 200 Conquistadors took on as many as 10,000 Incas, however, they conscripted many different groups to fight with them. You could imagine that a few mounted Conquistadors could do quite a bit of damage. An interesting game might be a few Conquistadors fighting with many Incas against a larger Inca group. For all it's known issues – have you considered DBA? Or even better, Hordes of the Things? |

I'm going to blow my own mixed metaphor and taut "Irregular Wars" (again). The 13 page rules set including 15 army lists for the period 1519-1625 is available to download here: link It's had some good feedback from the original release and is now in version 1.2.2 (the second 2 relates to revised army lists for better historical accuracy). I don't think we'll be making any more changes in the near future as the rules now seem to work great whether your in the tropics of the foot hills of the Andes or the bogs of Ireland. Designed for 15mm but with built in variations for 25. |

Thanks everyone so far. I've just downloaded Irregular Wars, and will give it a good read over coffee. But just to go back to the original question, if I have 100 figures, how many of those should be Incas, and how many should be Conquistadors to give a balanced game? |

If you want to be historically accurate you would, unfortunately, have 1 Conquistador and 99 Inca. For a Fun skirmish game how about 10 Conquistadors with 20 Peruvian allies. That leaves 70 Inca. They could be set up as: Apu on Palaquin with Porters (From Outpost) 40 Inca warriors 10 Huaminca Elite Warriors 10 i Warriors (or Chanca or Colla) 5 Anti Forest archers I think that adds up to about 70 Inca. See if that works for you. Ralph |

I forgot the Bleep filter won't allow C*U*N*T*I* Warriors. |

Do they come from Sc**thorpe? :) You could have Anti warriors too. They came from the fourth quarter of the empire. George Gush's army lists for his Renaissance rules have lists for Inca and conquistador. If you can find a copy they're worth a look. |

I used to have a crush on a girl from Scunthorpe
Irregular Wars Conquistadors vs Inca would give (as on suggested set of options): COLONIAL SPANISH (Conquistadors) 4x Mounted conquistadors 8x Sword and buckler armed foot 1x Priest 2x gunners (with one artillery piece) 9x Indian allies/mercenaries Total of 24 figures MESOAMERICANS (Inca) 16x Elite warriors 18x javelin/dart/arrow throwers 18x Warriors 12x Archers and/or slingers 1x Shaman Total of 65 figures Any further figures purchased would be focused at other optional units, eg. warhounds or crossbowmen for the conquistadors. |
