Gentlemen, With all the number of topics on hats and lace, I hope this request with draw some much needed tips. I shall be painting the IR 54 Sincere regiment, which has "scalloped" hat lace. Any tips on how to paint this in 15mm? My first impression was to use a toothpick for the rounded edges, but thought I had better ask. Cheers, Robert |

Have a go at painting a line of incomplete dots – sort of bite mark idea. Failing that, paint solid lace, add black vertical lines (but make sure they're thin) and then touch up the lace on top/vertical edge so that the lines only partially cross the lace. Neither is a perfect solution but it's what I'd try. |

I try to avoid painting the regiments that have scalloped hat lace. The idea of "dots" for 15mm figures makes sense. |

So no 1. Leibgarde? A verification; IR 54 Sincere list yellow buttons, yellow pom-pom and yellow and red bobs. The scalloped lacing would also be yellow? Cheers, |

Go with your first impression. A toothpick is just the thing for this sort of detail as a very uniformly sized dot can be created with a little practice. |

It can be done, but it is tough to get it right unless you are one of the few "Michaelangelos" that can do anything extremely well! If you are even a good painter then my first thought is to avoid units with scalloped lace, second thought is Thailand or Bangledesh, third is number one again!! |

Avoid doing them and having my Austrians a bit leaner without them? Now I am up for the challenge. The two battalions are nearly done and I should have the hats done by the weekend with photos added to the blog by early next week. Also have 10 flags and standards to do. Cheers, |
