This is one for the AB Figure fanatics and I wonder if someone can explain what has happend here. Recently I received two KK27 Grenzer skirmishing figures from Ian Marsh to make up an old 30 man unit to a 32 man unit. The figures are great. Plenty of detail. Clear castings. Usual AB standard. However, when I put them next to the old KK27 figures supplied by Michael Hickling, it is evident that the poses are different and the new figures are noticably smaller. When I dig out my AB Figures CD Catalogue, sure enough the KK27 figures shown are the new figures I have just received but it is evident from the catalogue that they are noticably smaller than the KK26 or KK28 figures shown next to them! I am all for figures of different heights but not accross one figure code. What happened? Why the change? The old KK27 figures were fine and they were the right size! |

If they lost their master figures or mold, they may have had to use production figures to create a new mold. If that happened there will be shrinkage with each generation down from the original But, if the pose is different too, then its probably a new sculpt and the sculptor made the new figure too small. Or, it could be none of the above as it could all just be a communist plot. Theories abound

Nic (of Eureka) and I occasionally discover figures that have clearly been remade at some point in AB's 20-year history, but where the remade masters were only supplied to AB Figures UK. Until 2006 the Oz and European markets didn't overlap because the licensing agreement didn't allow it, so it was a bit difficult to find out where else this may have happened – it's more obvious now all 15mm AB Figures originate from Eureka. The last item we discovered had been remade was the British 9pdr, and it sounds as if this may be a possibility with the grenzers. I'll raise it with Nic, if the eagle-eyed recently turned 93-year-old :-) hasn't spotted it already. As to other theories
Figures won't shrink noticeably in height between mould generations. Mould compression while casting makes figures thinner, not shorter. And only Tony Barton sculpts AB figures. Ian |

Thanks Ian. I am grateful for the response. The new versions of KK27 are great AB Figures, but they are just too small to mix with the old versions of KK27 or other AB Figures for that matter. Not a big problem for you I am sure. |

Lasalle, Your perception of which are the new figures may be the wrong way round! The ones from Mike Hickling may be newer. I have some original AB from Mike Hickling from my days as a painting service. If you drop me an email (ian at fighting15s dot co dot uk) to remind me of your details, I will sort out some matching figures for you. I only have a few, but IIRC you only need a couple. I have done some comparisons between the two sources, though, and only the standing firing figure is different. The other three variants are identical. Ian |

Sorry but I've got to clear this rumour up. No way Nic is 93, right? On the phone he doesn't sound half that. regards Max |

If anything the AB figs are getting larger over time. I have some of their 1806/7 Russians and the latest chaps in greatcoat are noticeably taller than the earlier figures in the same range. Pity. |

Yes, But the new Young Garde figures fit in perfect. Regards, |
