In the most recent issue of Scientific American (Nov. '09) there is a illustration reprinted from the 1909 issue depicting a boat with two windmills mounted on masts. The windmills rotate to face the wind and are geared to a screw prop.

Not very practical in real life, but maybe an interesting idea for VSF.

that is a good idea.

Also see the movie Water World for a higher tech version of this. Whether you like the movie or not the concept art book for the film is well wroth getting. The Mariner's sailing ship and the atolls were all designe to be fully functional.

There is a windmill powered ship someone uses for research now. I don't remember where I saw it but I'm am sure it is just a google away

The 36 foot catamaran, Revelation II, is powered by 3 20-foot long carbon fiber propellers on a 30 foot rotating mast.

Very interesting indeed. Until someone gets their head chopped off. :>

There have been all sorts of vessels powered by wind turbines, windmiills, etc. over the last 100 years or so. My personal favourites are wingsails and flettner rotors :)

IIRC there was a Napoleonic era drawing of a (fanciful) huge ship with windmills. It was drawn to theorise what the French might use to invade Britain, along with balloon-bourne troops.

I've watched windmill powered yachts sailing at Burnham on Crouch back in the 1980's. The talk in the pub there was that they were less fun to sail than a sail powered boat, could not obtain the same speed but were much more manoeuvrable. Also the maintenance costs were said to be high.

Nothing impracticable but I understand not a cheap option.
