Hello everyone. I'm looking at buying some reference materials for the uniforms, flags, etc. of the War of Spanish Succession (WSS) and I would like to know what I should bought first. I already have the two books by C.S. Grant from Partizan Press. What else should I look for? Any recommendations? What would be the best value for money? Are the available CDs on WSS uniforms any good? Thanks. |

Look for the Editions Brokaw series of booklets. There are booklets on pretty well every belligerent covering organisation, uniforms and flags. Some have some colour illustration pages; all have line drawings. There's also a series of very-fully illustrated articles in (pre-redesign) Wargames Illustrated covering the 1680s through the WSS including the flags, mainly of the French but also of the Dutch. |

The Hall CD's and info are excellent, giving uniforms and flags. There is also an excellent catalan PDF about the their involvement available on the web. |

There are some books on pikeandshotsociety.org I have a couple by Iain Stanford; Marlborough goes to War gives good ORBATs for Blenheim. You get a discount if you join the society. As mentioned above, Robert Halls work is useful for plates. I have most of the Partizan books on the period. Very useful. |

I have the Robert Hall set on the French army (the books on CD, not the Blenheim/Ramillies plates – all of which happen to be on the CDs) and those are great. Beyond that, I would think about what you want to model and look at appropriate sets for them. The Dutch set that Dan sells in the bookstore at northernwars.com (don't remember the author) is good, but not in English and there's a lot about them that is unknown. If you want to a lot of Dutch units you might get that. If you want to do just a few, you might just stick with the Grant books. I've restarted doing WSS and am planning to work towards Ramillies going from the French right to left and painting the appropriate units as they come up. |

My WSS forces are based around the time of Ramilles. as this gives me the allied Army in Brabant, Eugenes Austrians at the Battle of Turin and the French all over the shop. It was deliberate to pick 1706 as it is a nice change to be using the Crosses of St George and St Andrew instead of the Union flag for the British forces. It might be worth a look on the League of Augsberg site for information and ideas, Barry Hilton is pretty good on the period. |

Thanks for the info, Where is the best place to buy the Robert Hall CDs? Also are the plates on the CDs the same as the ones in the books? Note that I'm not looking for any Army or Nationality in particular. |

If you are in the States you can get the CDs from Dan Schorr on his Northern Wars site, or from On Military Matters. I think Bacchus sells them in the UK. |

We carry a full line of Schorr uniform CDs, guides, and plates (including the Hall plates). On our web page, type in "Schorr" in the search engine to pull them all up. You can also type in "Spanish Succ" to pull up additional books. Dennis from OMM onmilitarymatters.com |
