can't wait to see them all done
Simon, do you base differently according to army? i.e.- carthagin/numidian-more barren rocky sparse vegetation or do you keep a consistent theme for all armies? also--is there some secret attraction to bay horses with English wargamers
I have painted many horses,but never a bay(I'm American)
or were Numidian horse predominantly bays? Steve |

Hi Mike, something I have more of than you! I've already 3 dozen finished (which I should photograph
) ThorLongus, yes the bases for the Numidians will be a bit lighter, and somewhat more sparsely vegetated, than my Celts (for example). But they will have the same base of Raw Umber colour. I think Numidian horses could be all colours, but I have seen more bay barbs (with black legs) in the book of horses I use. These 5 units will have 11 blacks and greys, compared to 19 bays. Perhaps too many bays as a proportion
but I found a convenient tan primer, and got carried away! I must admit that I do think that bays look particularly attractive. Cheers, Simon |

Simon, When did Romans start to use standard shield emblems per legion. I am fairly sure that they were normal by 100 BC but am not sure when they started. I have some Crusader ANR001 – Republican Roman Hastati/Principes with Pilum and some LBMS transfers link When do you think these types of designs started? Mick |
BigRedBat | 01 Nov 2009 6:19 a.m. PST |
Hi Mick; it's anyone's guess! A much debated topic. I don't believe standard symbols per legion can be confirmed until the Civil War in 68-69AD (although they may well have existed). So no symbols, everyone with the same symbol, some soldiers with similar symbols or a variety of different symbols are all possible solutions. For my own republicans for Zama, I'm giving most no symbols, but some themed symbols (horses, for the first allied legion). picture Cheers, Simon |
