I have really been enjoying this series of battle reports on a great blog. Do the rivers have to be crossed only at bridges or can it be forded anywhere? That might make a difference in the defense.

Unfortunately they can be crossed anywhere except by artillery who must use the bridges. All infantry crossing them are unformed and lose I average die in inches per turn they have any part of their base in the river. No shooting while in the river. Cavalry are the same but lose 2 x average die. Not easy to cross, as it turned out troops need to break the enemy by fire before attempting it.
