Try DBR books. If you are familiar with DBR troop types designations you can check their Cossack army list in one of their army lists book. Also, there was recently an announcement on TMP about Eastern Renaissance warfare army lists for some other game. Check in Renaissance news for the last 2 months. If no one has better information in couple of days I can photocopy DBR information I have and can send it to you. Just contact me through TMP. Also, boardgames about this period can be very useful. I am not a board gamer and have no info on this. May be someone else has. |

There is an Eastern Renaissance Wargamers Yahoo group which has had a lot of discussion about that very subject in the past. You might want to join just to read the reference materials on file. link Cheers, Robert 18thcenturysojourn.blogspot.com |

Hello Stephan, You might want to get your hands on a copy of George Gajecky and Alexander Baran, The Cossacks in the Thirty Years War, 1969. Try searching in WorldCat or going through interlibrary loan. The University of Manitoba has a copy which I read many years ago. If you can wait a bit, I'll go through it next time I'm at the library. |

Picked up the mentioned book. Not much detail. It discusses the attempts and occasional successes of the Imperials in recruiting cossacks. No real discussion of the battles. All cossacks in the 30YW appear to have been light cavalry. |

Stephen, do You mean Zaporozhian Cossacks in period of TYW? Their armies, fighting against Turks in 1621 and against Poles in 1625, 1630, 1637 and 1638 were in 90 % infantry (different quality, it really depends on year), with really small number of very poor cavalry (usually used as dragoons). Cossacks infantry were fighting from field fortification and their famous tabor wagon. Regarding artillery – in 1621 at Chocim (Khotim) had 23 cannons, in 1637 at Kumejki 6 cannons, in 1638 uprising just 5. Cossack serving in TYW Catholic armies were different matters, they're mostly Polish light cavalry (so cossack style cavalry as it was called in Poland), only siuation that Zaporozhian Cossacks took part in that war it was one small contingent of them was employed by France and took part in siege of Dunkirk. I would be interested in a little more detail about the cossack levies against the Poles and Turks differed in quality from year to year. Thx. |

It really depends what was basis of each uprising/army. For example at Chocim in 1621 we had good experienced force of Cossacks, including all avaiable Registered Cossacks. But then for example in 1637 Pawluk's uprising Registered Cossacks mostly stayed on Crown side so rebel army had large number of Ukrainian peasants (so called 'chern'), experianced part of Pawluk's force was composed of so called (in Polish) 'wypiszczycy' which was name from Cossack removed from from Register. |
