We got all tangled up during a game of Fire and Fury on the weekend. The more I read the more tangled we got. If one brigade supported by another brigade, both in line, attack an enemy brigade supported by a second enemy brigade, both in line, All the supporting brigades participating brigade or incidental stands? The reason that this mattered was that the front brigade was disordered and spent, but the support was fresh. Since half the stands in the combat were fresh and un-disordered those DRM's would not apply if the supports were participating but would apply if the supports are merely incidental stands. The rules state that you cannot have a combat with multiple attackers vs multiple defenders in the same combat. They also state that if a brigade has more than half its stands counted into a combat then it is participating. Can a supporting unit add more stands than the brigade that it is supporting? Apparently we normally deploy our units in supported line formation, but were playing one of the scenarios when this came up. Suggestions please, Chris |

if u mean the 1st brigade is deployed in a single line and the 2nd brigade is deployed in single line 1 inch behind it . if the 2nd line is in support ( a supporting line ) its included in the combat . it then comes down to the factors involved
if more than half the stands are fresh , or ordered etc then those factors count
if u initiate a combat with more stands disordered than ordered and more spent than fresh you will get a kicking :( if u loose the combat and get disordered – all the stands involved are disordered – 1st and supporting line . |

When you have a single line brigade supported by another single line or a supported line brigade (the front rank only though), the supporting brigade has to be at least 50% of the front brigade. I think the supporting brigade can be bigger but not sure by how much, would need to read check the rules. If the supporting brigade is in double line, you only count the front rank of that brigade. The case you mentioned is the only time you can have multiple attackers and defenders. The melee examples in the rules cover most situations, if you have not had a chance, look over them closely. For fresh/worn/spent, low ammo, disordered – it comes down to the larger unit with stands involved, again keeping in mind that a single line getting support from a double line will only count the front rank of stands from the double line. If 50% or more are fresh, you get the fresh modifier, if 50% or more are disordered, you suffer the disordered modifier, etc, etc. |

The rules state that the supporting brigade must have at least 50% of the front brigades. The rules don't state what one does if the first brigade is the smaller of the two. So say the front brigade is a 5 stand brigade in line and the supporting brigade is an 8 stand brigade in line. It seems as if the rules say this is okay. The problem is that allows players to hide their fresh brigades behind their worn and spent brigades. Now of course, the spent brigades will eventually retreat and rout. But it seems to me that the rules should encourage players to rotate their fresh brigades into the front line. |

To a certain extent units can hide behind other units. However, a unit close enough to support a single line will suffer the results of fire at the front unit. Also if you can see two stands of a brigade, its an eligible target for fire, so if that 8 stand brigade is 2" behind the 5 stand but sticking out on one side, it can be shot at. Using banged up units to protect fresh units will work in certain circumstances but depending on them can really backfire. |
