See here for the latest info on piracy: link It seems the lucrative revenue stream is drawing others into the business. Wonder how long it will be 'til they are listed as an enterprise on NASDAQ, under the symbol ARRR? |

Some would argue that Wall Street is already run by pirates. |

I am waiting for the big shipping lines to run a couple of Q boats . That would make some interseting scenerios |
| Mithmee | 14 Oct 2009 1:15 p.m. PST |
Well for starters we should sink any group of individuals who are 200+ miles out to sea when they are in those types of boats. Plus I feel that there are a few mother ships out there since these boats are running on outbroads and they have been found 200-300+ miles out to sea. |

Interesting point about foreign fishing boats heading down there due to the chaos and displacing the natives, causing some Somalis to turn to piracy. I never thought about that angle. |

Id love to charter an accountant and sail the broad account-sea. Ahoy shipmates on the Crimson Permanent Assurance.. (I paid premium on the car last week :( ) |

Also remember- 1) Pirates have always been well organised and sophisticated--Look at Drake!! 2) I think one of the problems with the Somali pirates is that one day they ARE legitamate fishermen the next day they try it on as pirates and can hit big money.. 3)With no real government in Somalia there are no in house police to nip it in the bud ashore

aaargh me thinks organised and sofistigated be relative terms! :) |
| Mithmee | 14 Oct 2009 7:44 p.m. PST |
Okay legit fishermen are not out 200 miles in the boats that these guys are using. As to stopping it forget about Somali doing it and just kill them. Once you have killed off a thousand or more then others just might think twice about doing it. So if you find some guys in 18-20' boats just kill them because they are not out fishing for fish. link Forget about capturing them because that will not stop this problem. |

Killing people never stops someone from doing it for the money. Stop paying ransoms and it will stop overnight. |

Maybe killing 2-3 then yes they will not stop. But you starting killing everyone out in one of those boats then they will think twice before heading out to sea. The problem is that we are just to nice when what you really need to be do is not be nice. We do the same thing with terrorist. Treat them as criminals and try and arrest them. This approach has never worked. I believe in the Mossad approach and kill them when you find them. I watched a BBC Documentary about this incident. link It was very PRO-IRA leaning and stated that the women killed was a young lady. She was over 30 years of age and had just recently gotten out of prison for carrying out bombings. She served 10 years. link Oh and what the first article does not state is that they did find the real car bomb and they were killed while carrying out a dry run. So yes they were unarmed they were in the process of carrying out a terrorist act and they were killed while ding it. The SAS did the right thing in killing them. A dead terrorist is always better than an alive terrorist and this same thing goes for pirates. You want it to stop then start killing them. |

@Mithmee – doesn't work there will always be a steady supply of live fast die young types to provide the cannon fodder. The places you hit are their support networks. Put simply if they don't have Tortuga to spend their ill gotten gains and sell them guns, ammo, fuel, repair their boats etc. then they die out. During the Cromwell's sojourn in Ireland Wexford copped it because it was a nest of pirates who'd preyed on English shipping. That stopped the problem. There we go some ideas for games in there. |

That my be true but I feel that they just might have problems in getting more boats with the powerful outbroad motors. Plus I am all for destroying their bases of operations. How do most of the posts here tie into gaming? Well they don't. This is Modern Discussion but if you want gaming ideas then here they are. 1st – You are the pirates and you need to capture several ships and get them back to your port before you get killed. 2nd – You are the French, United States or who ever and you need to kill all the pirates before they can capture any ships. Now how would you play the terrorist piece that I had provided links to. 1st – You are the terrorist and you need to eluded capture and get your car bomb in place without getting killed. 2nd – You are the SAS and you need to kill the terrorists before they get their car into place. There now both tie to gaming. |

Not only are foreign trawlers removing all the fish from the local seas, organized crime syndicates are dumping toxic waste off Somalia as well. The Italian mafia uses the area to cheaply dispose of waste Italian businesses can't be bothered to get rid of safely. There are reasons why the locals are uppity. Ultimately the only solution will be sorting out Somalia. |
| Mithmee | 11 Nov 2009 1:48 p.m. PST |
I think we discuss that before and I really doubt that the Italian Mafia is going to sail over seven thousand miles just to dump some toxic waste. Check the map and you will find that the one way distance is around 3,500-3,700 miles from Italy to the area off of Somalia. |
