Recently, in response to an announcement on TMP, I ordered the CD back issues for everyone's two favorite British glossies. Both were reasonably priced (for what you get – 225 and 300 issues) and came on multiple cds in PDF format. Shipping to the US was quick (a little over a week I believe).

As often happens with cds, both sets had minor errors including one blank disk. I emailed both companies and within another week had replacement disks in hand.

The PDFs themselves are of high quality and do not have any DRM. I have printed out several articles on a color laser and have had no problem transferred the files to my large external hard drive and have the disks put away as backups. I also am reading some of the issues on my Kindle DX.

Big thanks to the folks at both magazines for producing these. They are a great value! The service from both companies was likewise great! I will be ordering the next disks when they are released. Next stop, Slingsgot!

Cheers,

John Adkins

They're great aren't they. I edited the articles I wanted into a single pdf – one day I'll do it as a bound volume.

what kind of price are we talking about here?

John Adkins WV14 Oct 2009 11:13 a.m. PST

For Miniature Wargames it was 117.95 pounds or just under $200. USD Wargames Illustrated was 80 pounds or about $130. USD So, basically, for less than $350 USD I picked up over 500 great magazines in a compact and accessible format. I will be selling the print versions I have at the next convention flea market to recoup a bit of the cost but overall I feel it is a bargain.

Timmo uk,

Great idea. You could put together theme packs for yourself of articles on different subjects. Nice.

Does either of these sets have an index covering all the issues?

Are there indexes on the disks to help find articles?

I looked at the Miniature Wargames collection. 15 pounds postage, that is $23. USD Is that reasonable for a dozen CD's?

Timmo uk14 Oct 2009 1:56 p.m. PST

No index but I think you can get third party software/shareware to make one, although that's going to eat your time.

I think £15.00 GBP to post 12 CD's to USA from UK is acceptable but YMMV.

Depends if you think 12 CDs weigh 1kg then it's reasonable.

Kind regards

Then again, posting them as paper copies would be somewhat more expensive….

About a year ago I bought the first 8 CD's of WI; they're great! I was also interested in an index as well. So I emailed WI and got a Word document of the first 200. That definitly helps me when moving from period to period or looking for a particular author. If you have no luck, email me off line and I'll send you what I have.

John Adkins WV15 Oct 2009 7:47 a.m. PST

Miniature Wargames provides an index on each disk. WI does not.

I think that what is really needed is a bit of crowd sourcing. It would be fantastic to be able to search across wargaming magazines for articles on a battle or topic. A master index or database could easily be produced if a bunch of us were able to work together. It would be great to incorporate other mags like MWAN and the COurier as well as various web/pdf only publications.

If anyone is interested in working on this please let me know by e-mailing me at my first and last name all together as one word @ucwv.edu. I know that I am not the only librarian on the list – anyone else want to jump in on this project?

Redmist, I would love to see a copy of the index you have as well!

On Military Matters has the first four Minature Wargames CDs (issues 1-25, 26-50, 51-75, and 76-100) in stock at $20 USD each. We are getting in the next batch of CDs (from 101 to 300) in 2-3 weeks. All at $20 USD each. Total would be 12 CDs for $240 USD plus shipping for 300 issues.

By way of comparison, all 34 years of Eisenbahn Kurier costs 40 Euros (408 issues on 2 DVDs).

MIBA gives you all 55 years for 60 Euros (660 issues on 3 DVDs).

Is anyone selling the Wargames Illustrated CDs still?

Architectus Militaria30 Nov 2009 3:05 a.m. PST

Hi cmsciulli

As far as I know you can still get them from 'Wargames Illustrated'. They cover Issue 1 to 225. Jolly good read… AND they take up less space than the magazines too!

Who has the WI CDs?
