Some examples could betaken from medieval afghan forts which were largely incorporated into the surrounding terrain. Many were built so well they are still being used my tribal lords today. At work right now so im affraid I don't have any pictures to share. |

CC, I'd work with blue foam (or pink or whatever color is available). The only example that I have that sort of relates to what you want to do is shown in the link: bcoleary.home.att.net/cc.html Its a junk piece that I was working on a few years back, but shows a structure set into the rock. I know this piece isn't very inspiring, but it shows application of the material and method, and you can produce just about any shape or style very rapidly. I think you could use the foam to build your structures onto and into the cork. The foam can be shaped to mate with the cork and works faster and easier than even the cork. The foam can be sliced into various slabs, beams, and shaped with hand or power tools, including saws, files, rasps, sureforms, and knives. Hotwires/pens/knives and dremels can be used to texture pieces very quickly. You could probably mimmic the cork texture with a dremel in little time. The best tool for shaping the foam is here: link |

IrishSerb, Thanks for the picture. Nice piece! Wouldn't know why you'd call it a "junk piece." So, did you start with the basic foam wall "box", and then added the additional foam around it? CC |

I would think, depending on how clean the cork can be cut (never worked with it) you could cut out the area from a cork hill, then just add on whatever is needed (like exterior windows, gun ports, etc). If it can't be cut cleanly, you could use foamcore or blue foam to make the fort, then apply cork around the sides so it blends in with the rest of your terrain, hiding the non-clean cuts against the foam side, then using bits to cover over any visible holes. Excellent work so far! |

CC-- Look at my pdfs again that I provided links to in regards to the textured paint and tatooine buildings. In the pics you will also note other buildings and rocky outcrops in which I used the formed paper that usually comes with computers or other electronics items. Some creative cutting could yeild your shapes. |

Here is an outstanding Epic-scale Squat mountain/mine fortress. Something like that in 15mm and desert-ified would be just what I'm thinking for Sahadeen. link Man, the stuff that guy does is golden. You should look at his Tau city. |

CC, The rock was cut out of 1" layers of blue foam with an "L" shaped cavity for the rooms, shaped with a hacksaw blade and Perma-Grit sanding stick. The walls were added from a 1/2 thick slab of blue foam with the blocks pressed in with a ball point pen. Some relief was then added with thinner strips of blue foam. |

@Irishserb, That is awesome! Do you not like using the hot wires? RebelMike |

I know. That is awesome indeed, IrishSerb. You've got me wavering now. At first I thought about doing those pieces with cork, to match the other bits I've done so far. I'm so confused now. :) CC |

There is a very cool – though grand and maybe impractical – Canyon base in this Votoms episode: YouTube link Make sure to hit 'HQ' to watch high-def footage. If you just want to see the base, start watching around the 2:55 mark or so, but there's lots of 'kewl pew-pew action' coming up, as well as more footage of the base if you watch the ensuing episodes that are listed on the right scroll window. |

cc- I think your cork left dark brown with some lighter sandpiles that match the ground cover like you origanlly were planning is the right course of action. by contrasting you create greater drama in presentaion. the akakus mountin pics are great inspiration! |

Maybe I should just be happy with making something 1/3 the size of this concept drawing: picture Four or five buildings, and the two market tents would be cool for now. Making the whole thing is just a little too ambitious, plus will be a pain to store. Dan |
