Split off from this earlier thread: TMP link Given the recent polls and discussions on various related rule sets, I thought it might be time to revisit this topic, last polled in March 2008. Respondents could choose to vote for up to five from the following: Age of Battles: Antiquity Ancient & Medieval Wargaming Ancient Empires Ancient Warfare Ancients D6 Arcane Battle Composer Arcane Warfare Armati Basic Impetus Battlestandard Ancient Rules Casus Belli Clash of Iron Classical Hack Commands & Colors: Ancients Conquerors and Kings Crusader De Bellis Antiquitatis De Bellis Multitudinis De Bellis Magistrorum Militum Field of Glory Hex Command: Ancients Holy Hack Homeric Hack Hoplomachia Hoplon Impetus Justified Ancients King David l'Art de la Guerre Legion Legion and Empire Lost Battles Might of Arms Mighty Armies: Ancients Piquet: Archon Strategos Tactica The Art of War The Die Is Cast The Shock of Impact Vis Bellica Warhammer Ancient Battles Warlord Warmaster Ancients Warrior WRG ancients 6th edition WRG ancients 7th edition Other: Historical Other: Fantasy Other: House Rules I think it would be very interesting to compare the results with those from the 2008 combined poll: TMP link Cheers, Scott |

For me, DBA, Basic Impetus, and Command and Colors Ancients are played with about the same frequency. At the club we also see some WAB but that is about it (reflecting the interests of those who run games). |

This is definitely not scientific, but it is interesting! I checked the membership of various Yahoo Groups for some of the rules listed above and got these totals: WAB 4300 WMA 2466 DBM 2060 DBA 1968 FOG 1269 Armati 772 Classical Hack 515 Tactica 335 Vis Bellica 303 There's no way to correlate sales to players to interest, especially since some of these games have followings on various forums, web sites, etc.., but it did produce some interesting numbers. |

DBA Note that the DBA Yahoo Group has 2027 subscribers as of today but 50 do not seem active. I doubt that more than 1000 are players today, and only a handful actually comment.
DBMM seems to have 1508 active. There is a DBA Fansite link with 2241 members. Only 1230 have made 5 or more posts. 120 have made 400 plus posts. Top poster has 7300, second most is 4700. My point is that absolute numbers of Yahoo membership is not such a great indicator of world wide play, however, ordinal ranking might show a correlation with popularity. Total number of events/players at large conventions would be interesting to see too. Some games are more tournament oriented -- the top six in aegiscg47 list plus DBMM. These games generate more members with discussion as they have more detailed questions. Note too that DBA is actually two games. The standard 1 on 1 with 12 element armies at the 2 foot board AND the big battle game with multiple players and hundreds of bases. But that is beyond the scope of this thread, I guess. |

Impetus not much else in the last year (a bit of DBA, but hardly enough to really count..) |
Marshal Mark | 13 Oct 2009 12:01 p.m. PST |
If you're looking at Yahoo groups, messages per month over the last few months would give a much better indication of current popularity I think. For example, over the last year, the total number of messages for the FOG, WAB and DBM lists is as follows : FOG – 3,405 WAB – 2,731 DBM – 1,629 But as already noted, some of these games have online forums which are more active. For example, DBM does not so the only place for discussion is the DBM list. But FOG is mainly discussed on the Slitherine website, where there have been 61,000 posts since its inception at the start of 2007. |

The Art of War (title as printed on the cover) is indeed on the list, right above The Die Is Cast The Shock of Impact While compiling the lists, I did consider the problem of rules titles beginning with definite articles. After trying out various possibilities, I finally opted to include "De Bellis" rules in the D's, "l'Art de la Guerre" in the L's, and rules beginning with "The" in the T's. Not an ideal solution, perhaps, but at least it is internally consistent. Cheers, Scott |

Yahoogroups can be deceiving – I'm in the DBA and both DBM ones
.but do not get messages & never post (so why bother..??..) and am on hte DBMM group twice with 2 different addresses! the DBMM group has had anything from 1000 to 2800 messages per month in 2009 – with a high of 3900 only a month after it started (Jan 2004) and a recent high of 3500 in 2008
but much of that relates to revisions to army list books and now the rules so it is "high intensity" for a few people contributing to those processes |

Yahoo group, forum, etc membership, messages posted, and even sales, only tell us whichgames peope are talking about or buying. This may be an aproximation of games being played, but it will only be an aproximation. I know that at our club lately FOW seems to be the most played. DBA gets fairly reguar play as well. Most any other set has one or two guys who like them, but do not see alot of club play. |

At the Old Glory "Worlds" at Derby the other weekend the biggest Ancients period was WRG 6th with IIRC 42 players then FOG with 36, WRG 7th, DBMM, Armati and Impetus all had in the region of 20 players. |

"WRG 6th with IIRC 42 players " at teh Derby Worlds That is a significant change. I missed this year, but have been in the hall where these games are played on previous years. It looks, if that figure is correct, and I believe it will be, as though the WAB players have all decamped to WRG 6th – both being 28mm Ancients – and in previous years, they have been sitting next to each other in the same room. one could speculate on that for a while, I think. for example, does it represent a step back in rules of 20 years from WAB to 6th, or a step forward in rule mechanisms of 15 years from Hyperboria to WRG
