Another update on my 6mm Borodino project. Once again I've managed an inanely long blog post. This one covers:
-Davout and the French I Corps
-Painting Adler French
-the intricacies of scenic basing

…or that's the story I'm sticking to, anyways!

Some of the most beautifully painted 6s I've seen.
I'm jealous.

Those Adler look good, too.

cfielitz13 Oct 2009 9:25 a.m. PST

Good gravy! I can't believe those are 6mm! You need to put up a tutorial on how to do such a fantastic job.

cfielitz13 Oct 2009 9:26 a.m. PST

Oh, I guess you do ;)

How do you get your static grass to stand up?

Suvarov:

What a great blog!

May I ask, what rules are you using for the Napoleonics? I thought I saw Polemos out there, but I just wanted to ask.

Holy cow. Personally, I think he has a magic shrink ray, and those are 28mm figs he painted, then shrank down to 6mm size. ;-)

My word, they are absolutely fantastic. Without a doubt the best 6mm work i've seen.

Lord Ashram13 Oct 2009 4:18 p.m. PST

Wow, let me echo the above posters by saying "Fantastic!"

Forget the figures, a moment… great start to a blog! Lots of beautiful eye candy, a little witty banter sprinkled into tons of information… very nice! I wish there were more posts to look at!:)

Great stuff… I can honestly say one of my favorite all-time eye candy spots after only the 6mm napoleonics. Please keep it up!

That's how I like to see a Napoleonic Army – massed and wave after wave. I am currently painting 15mm Napoleonics and was thinking about giving 10mm a try – and now I see what a excellent paint job can do to 6mm. Decisions.

Adler has 2 figures for Davout; one is bald and has glasses on! Yes, a 6mm figure with glasses! Adler also produces 2 Murats. All the command personalities are well worth the purchase!

Outstanding

By the way, how about "Redoubt"?

KniazSuvorov14 Oct 2009 2:50 p.m. PST

Not sure about rules yet. I've only got 15 French bases and 12 Russian completed, and ideally I'd like about twice that number before I really start thinking about gaming. They are based for the army-level version of Polemos, for what that`s worth.

On the figures front, if Adler makes a bald Davout figure (with glasses!), I WILL have to get the personalities pack. That settles it.

isttexas14 Oct 2009 3:34 p.m. PST

KniazSuvorov,

see below:
XFNP 1 Napoleons Marshals
Includes specific figures for Napoleon, Murat(2), Ney, Davout(2), Mortier, Soult,
Bessires, St Cyr and others. Many of the figures are generic and can be painted as
Generals of Brigade or Division. £ 4.95

And yes: "there is a bald Davout with glasses". Actually, both Davouts have glasses…it's just easier to see the glasses on the hat-less one.

Angel Barracks16 Oct 2009 6:36 a.m. PST

yes he is a bit of a 6mm wizard

GeorgethePug16 Oct 2009 7:08 a.m. PST

Super stuff …….. makes me want to look into some 6mm

Keraunos16 Oct 2009 7:21 a.m. PST

The bald Davout with glasses is detailed enough that you can paint silver specs onto him with an 000 brush.

Or at least, I remember thinking I did, and one of my friends is certain he saw the figure and the specs.

If I can find it, I'll post a pic somewhere over the weekend. Painting positively shoddy, by comparison, of course.

Keraunos16 Oct 2009 11:39 a.m. PST

curses, my camera will not go smalle enough, its just a blur.

sorry, but the tiny wee chap is as bald as a failed Tory leader

Robert le Diable17 Oct 2009 12:49 p.m. PST

Great pictures, with plenty of precision of detail amidst the mass effect. Many thanks for sharing these.

Old Bear19 Oct 2009 3:15 a.m. PST

I tried getting back into painting six-mils not long ago after having sold all my old collections, and I was horrified to discover that even with glasses my eyes and ability to paint such small minis had deteriorated beyond repair.

Echoing what others have said these are gob-smackingly good and it's one of the few blogs I've read in a while that actually made me smile in enjoyment.

I can't wait to ssee your be-spectacled Davout!

svsavory25 Oct 2009 11:49 a.m. PST

Beautiful work! Very impressive, thanks for sharing.

PaintsByNumbers28 Oct 2009 10:42 p.m. PST

> Getting a paintbrush in there without making a mess is tediously slow business, not helped by the mutually-interfering presence of two big clusters of troops per base. I keep brainstorming ideas on how to make this whole process easier.
>

Glue the rear group on, do the flocking on that half of the base, then do the front.

Jbickley0014 May 2010 9:10 p.m. PST

nice work, i love your bases. what rules are you basing them for? Thus far I seem to be using rule sets that have lots of 6mm figures on 20x20 bases, so I never get to take advantage of 60x60mm detail.

I like adler, but the heads are so large. Most of my minis are baccus, excet for the personalities.

bgbboogie15 May 2010 6:45 a.m. PST

I hate you……i'll have to revisit my armies for a brush up now Grrrrrr !

FatherOfAllLogic15 May 2010 7:23 a.m. PST

Way better than mine. I go for the 'impressionist' look, although the more figures I paint, the more ambitious I get. We'll see where it goes…..

I agree with you on using various shades of blue.

CATenWolde15 May 2010 8:00 a.m. PST

Great work! I've just about made the decision to go with Adler, based 2 ranks of 9 per 40x20mm base, and it's great to see what the actual effect will be. Borodino is the next big battle anniversary coming up, so your blog will doubtless serve as further inspiration.

Cheers,

Christopher

Great stuff. I like the vignette style of basing. I'll try it with some 10mm I've ordered.

Thanks for sharing.
