Which manufacturer would you suggest for an army of the late TYW in 15mm?

Connard Sage12 Oct 2009 6:51 a.m. PST

With Serbo-Croats? Paging Mr. Howard Whitehouse

sorry, it's an in-joke.

I'd say Testudo, but they seem to have gone out of production. Again.

Have a look at this list

I would go with the Old Glory figs. They are nice, they are plentiful and they are cheap. Plus the service is fast, friendly and reliable. And currently if you buy an army you might get a pretty significant discount.

Who carries Old Glory in 15mm in the UK?

Connard Sage12 Oct 2009 8:13 a.m. PST

Used to be available through Battle Honours in Redditch, but they ceased trading last year.

Looking at the pictures on the US site, they aren't that great IMHO.

Timecast models have Old Glory 15s in the UK. They don't have the TYW/ECW range on their website at the moment though.

Timecast I believe Nik….although I am not sure if they have got as far as doing the renaissance stuff yet.

I've always felt the 2nd edition Minifigs were terrific. They didn't have the variations in each type that people seem to expect today but still very nice. Their personality figures were quite recognizable.

I have maybe 2000 Old Glory figures. They look great. My only complaint is the number of times I ran a drill bit through my finger drilling out the holes for pikes. The rest of my armies are from the old Naismith/Minifig line. I'll bet some of them are 20 years old at least. Testudo makes great figures, but they are out of production right now. Hopefully, they will be back soon. MiniFigs is working n a TYW line, but they are not ready for production yet. Let's all keep bugging Tom for them.

They already have one. It's not available in the States yet.

Some of the Essex Cav has also held up over the years, and should be easy to obtain in the UK. Good luck.

How well does Essex and Old Glory mix? I like the Essex cavalry but the infantry is a bit wooden.

Old Glory are annoying in that many of their figures look awful unpainted but actually paint up OK, which makes deciding whether to buy them without seeing a painted example a bit of a lottery :-(

Essex are always a good stand-by but can, IMO, lack character – but very easy to get hold of as I live 20 minuites away from them :-)

Minifigs – that will, I assume, depend on how quickly Caliver get production back on line after their buy-out. Thanks for the heads up on them though :-)

OK, here are some quick photos I just shot before the camera batteries died.

Obviously, the basing isn't finished yet. The photos hopefully will show the difference between Old Glory, Minifigs, and the old Naismith line. No cav photos yet. But that probably won't help much as I only have OG cav.

Nik Gaukroger13 Oct 2009 12:52 p.m. PST

I wouldn't mind seeing pics of the Old Glory cavalry if you can manage it.

Cav, artillery and generals are here:

I've use a lot of Essex over the years but while well made and easy to paint I find them to lack character and animation these days. There is also the fact that the range has a number of details wrong for the TYW, coats are either too short for Swedes or too long for early Germans. All "Pots" worn by the cavalry are the very English 3-bar pot, there is not a "Hungarian Pot" (aka Dutch Pot, aka Zischegge) to be found. Almost every non-cuirassier cavalryman comes equipped with a carbine which is rather annoying when you try to model Swedes and others who were not equipped with carbines.

If you can find them there is also Matchlock miniatures, while an ECW range it contains a surprisingly large number of usefull figures for a late TYW army.
At the moment the cavalry seem only to be available from Viking Forge link , could be that the infantry is no longer available from Caliver Books as well.
Several of the cavalry figures come with proper 'Dutch Pots" (i.e Zischegge style helmets) rather than the ever present English 3-bar 'Pot' that is worn by the Essex figures. And not every figure carries a carbine
link
The figure marked ECW-41 actually makes up a good part of my TYW 'Demi-Cuirassiers, while I used ECW-44 to form a squadron of Harquebusiers. By changing the command stand and mixing the figures a bit diffrently they take to the field as either Swedes or Bavarians.

With regard to Old Glory thei figures do indeed seem to paint up much better than a glance at the unpainted figures would suggest. And IMHO the cavalry seems to be better sculpted than the infantry. And they have the advantage that the figures are actually designed for the TYW.
By mix the various figures in hats (I.e 'Light cavalry', Finnish cavalry and German Reiters) one should be able to recreate the varied apperance of much of the battle cavalry of the later TYW.

Peter Pig ECW figures have the disadvantage that they are a noticably smaller that for example Essex their gun models are a hidden treasure IMO. Their Ligh & Very Light guns are just perfect as regimental cannon and battalion guns while the heavy cannon does very well as 12-16 pound cannon. My Swedes will certainly not leave camp without them ;-)

museum miniatures ecw infantry are also nice , not so keen on the cavalry ( not a fan of their horses ) … the figures are of the taller end of 15 mm and match up with essex/old glory

Only an issue if you mix them of course :-)

Quite like the look of that range to be honest, missing some Dutch pot wearing cavalry though but that seems to be quite common :-(

In order to sweep away Connard Sage's doubt, I tell you all that Testudo is working again, here link

Please, enjoy the figures,

In addition to manufacturers mentioned already

There's the Freikorps range via LKM link Defined as ECW/30YW

or Gladistor via Black Hat link Defined as ECW
