Most people that post here seem to be impulse buyers- I see it – it looks really godd – I've got to have it! I am different in that it is reading an interesting book that normaly sparks my interest and makes me want to invest in gaming that era. Do new releases advertised on TMP make you reach for your credit card? I think that many tounament players look for the most effective option from the lists, although I know that a minority deliberately go for the most obscure. Seeeing well painted figures at shows? The new period being gamed at the club? What does it for you? |

well painted miniatures! sucker for it every time. strange that when you buy them – they always turn up a dull silver metal colour – and no matter how long you leave them on the to do pile – they never ever paint themselves! |

Pictures of well painted figures inspire me more than words. Unpainted figures are easier to pass up. Figures without images are always passed by. |

For me, it's the period and scale. I have discovered many new ranges, including many without any pictures, that have spurred me on to do armies! I would have really regretted NOT buying some ranges (like Roundway and Heroics and Ros) just because "they didn't have pictures". I could never understand that approach! Who actually suffers from that? Gamers always want to see new figures! When companies release new figures that would satisfy these demands, not enough buy them to motivate the company to bring out more. Potentially good ranges die off because only those who bought them know what they are like. Of course, companies should try to provide pictures. "I" prefer to see the bare metal as a paint job can often make a great figure look bad and visa versa! When a comp[any already has hundreds of figures released, providing pictures of painted figures is like wanting a snail to climb Mt. Evans! 8>) Also, when doing pictures, the shot should be of just one figure. Shots with many figures really are hard to show off the detail as the depth of field does not allow for the eye to "see" the details very well. So for me, it's the scale and period that drives ME to invest in new ranges. Best Tom Dye GFI |

Interest in the period. Of course I read widely so I'm interested in almost any period. If good looking figures come along then it is BAMO! new army. |

Like you, I wouldn't say I'm an impulse buyer either, but nice miniatures (painted or not) definitely get me thinking sometimes. Also, like you, inspiration for a new "army" would have to be the combination of my interest in the period/army and suitable figures (IMO of course). This interest can be from what I've read and/or seen in other media. A good case in point would be the recent Victrix & Perry plastic Napoleonics. I've always had a keen interest in the period, but until those manufacturers' releases, I hadn't had any plans for building armies. Alternatively, there have been many nice minis (and ranges) announced on TMP (both painted or not) that have yet to draw me into them. Again, mainly due to me not having a particular interest in the period/"army." So, I guess my list for buying a new army could be: o Interest in the period/army – from books/other media. o Nice miniatures available for said interests. o Ruleset to go with the period/figures – I pretty much am limited in this area – one set each for most periods. Or something like that anyway. Regards, Dean |

What gets me to buy an "army" as opposed to just buying figures to paint is getting to demo or play the game first and finding I enjoy it. Second to that is an interest in the period or the appeal of the genre. Third is an attractive rulebook: price, presentation, quality of writing, etc. |

Tends to be a coincidence of things: reading a book/seeing a film and then coming across a suitable range of figs; a new cool rulebook and some well done BatReps; hearing a review or playing a demo and figs going on sale
stuff like that. For example, I just saw Copplestone's Monthly offer and imagined nice new Bolshevik army, but there wasn't any second factor to push me over the edge to make a purchase. *whew* I also tend to buy figs in themes or projects. Right now all my purchases are centered around Post Apoc Stalker type games, so I'm increasing that portion of my collection and painting all appropriate items in my queue. A single overriding factor would be one of my regular gaming buddies saying "Hey! Let's do this, and I'll get this faction." Then I'd promptly buy an army. |

All sorts of things for me
seeing cool sculpts, reading a battle report, seeing a movie, reading a book, playing a video game
it's all over the place. |

I'll let you know when I figure it out and actually buy an army instead of asking about it. ;-) |

Serendipity. I have pre-established interest in the period. Then some nice figures cross paths with me when I have A: money to spend and B: I'm ready to do something 'new'. |

You know, after spending this evening looking at a certain manufacturers so-so figures, I honestly will say that I like 'exciting' looking figures. That and availability of different troop types. |

I am definitely a "visual" buyer. Great paint jobs make it even more difficult to resist the impulse to buy, buy, buy

I decide what I need to expand my collection to a peroid or geographic area that joins on to what i've got already- then look for figurer I like. |

New figures, especially beautiful multi-part plastic figures where I can convince myself that I can put together a good-sized, attractive force inexpensively. |

Interest in the period, so reading a good book or three on the subject. Think about level of representation (platoon vs army say). Get some figs/vehicles organised along correct lines for level of representation. Think about some rules. |

GeoffQRF | 12 Oct 2009 4:07 a.m. PST |
I'm talking with Geoff at QRF about making 15mm figures for the Iran Iraq War
Can I just point out we are looking at the commercial feasibility of whether a range can be produced and what would be required, not actually starting to make them (although I do appear to have one Basij chap here
) A lot of it depends on the level of interest. |
Timmo uk | 12 Oct 2009 7:06 a.m. PST |
It has to be a combination of: a) real interest in the period that I keep coming back to over and over again rather than just a passing thing b) figures that I really want to buy and then love enough to be able to spend many hours painting c) a set of rules that inspire me to play There are very few periods that I can tick all three of those boxes for. Those that do I collect and I'm now doubtful I'll ever start anything new but we'll see in time. I think as I get older I've learnt to enjoy seeing all sort of periods, press releases, figures at shows but without wanting them for myself ie I don't impulse buy anymore. |
