Hi folks – I am currently in the process of putting together a 28mm Pyrrhic army (morphing from a largely Old Glory/Newline Seleucid army), and was looking around for suitable Hellenistic xystophoroi figures. Foundry Alexandrian Companions have already been recommended. When checking other possibilities though I noticed that Garrison have a nice HC lancer, in crested Thracian helmet, in their 28mm SKT Seleucid range. Can anyone advise on relative sizes of the Garrison Seleucids? Would they be a reasonable fit with Old Glory and Newline? Any other relevant comment? Thanks in advance, Cheers, Paul. |

The SKT figures were big and chunky for their time, so sizewise can fit in with modern 28mm figures. I would suggest getting samples, thiough, as the style may not be to your taste. I have the Kappadokian infantry from that range, and they're OK, but a little odd, as the lower limbs seem to be a little undernourished. I would want to check that Seleucid line cavalryman to see how well the horse worked with other ranges. Allen |

Thanks Allen. Had another look at other cavalry in the range and the horses definitely look a bit wee. Responding to your post on the other Pyrrhic thread made me realise that I had forgotten about the Crusader Oscan cavalry that will be in the army as well :P Still, minimum order size is pretty reasonable though so I will grab a few samples anyway. Cheers, Paul. |

The Seleucid rider looks excellent. The Crusader Oscan cavalry, based on their Roman predecessors, shouyld be mounted in Ebob's horses, which are quite tall. I'll be interested to hear your comments when you receive them. I might need some, too! Allen |

Got my little box of samples today (1 of each SKT Seleucid cavalry code with the exceptions of the cataphract and half-armoured Companion). Some real gems, and some fairly ordinary figures as well. Overall, size is compatible with Old Glory, Newline and 1st Corps Hellenistic ranges. Three different horse poses – one of which (not sure which code, they all arrived in the same plastic bag) was noticeably smaller than the other two (but still bigger than MM/Navigator horses). Should be OK with a built-up base. Poses quite animated, with a little flash. Of the riders, the line cavalry and Early Successor companions were the pick of the bunch, being well-proportioned (but see below) and quite finely detailed. The helmets (crested Thracian helmets, with the addition of feathers for the Companion) are particularly nice. The line cavalrymen are rather barrel-chested fellows, but not unreasonably so. One of the light cavalry figures (again, not sure whether the Tarentine or one of the civic militia cavalry) suffers from macrocephaly. The light cavalry were only purchased for completeness – I think I have enough Hellenistic light cavalry to cover Pyrrhus anyway. If I feel compelled to increase their number I will probably just stay with Old Glory. The Galatian cavalryman wasn't bad – nicely detailed, but the proportion was slightly off (head was a shade too big, or body a shade too small) but not to the extent that the light cavalry figure was. The triple-disc cheekpieces were a nice touch. On balance, a worthwhile purchase. The line cavalry and Alexandrian companion are very nice figures, and I will definitely be picking up some more. Cheers, Paul. |
