Given the recent polls and discussions on various ancient-medieval rule sets, I thought it might be time to revisit this topic, last polled in March 2008. Respondents could choose to vote for up to five from the following suggested list of fifty different options: Ancient & Medieval Wargaming Ancient Warfare Arcane Battle Composer Arcane Warfare Armati Basic Impetus Bloody Barons Casus Belli Classical Hack Commands & Colors: Ancients Conquerors and Kings Crusader Day of Battle Days of Knights De Bellis Antiquitatis De Bellis Multitudinis De Bellis Magistrorum Militum Field of Glory Glutter of Ravens Hack in the Dark Holy Hack Homeric Hack Hoplomachia Hoplon Impetus Ironbow Justified Ancients King David Knight Hack l'Art de la Guerre Lost Battles Medieval Warfare Might of Arms Mighty Armies: Ancients Piquet: Archon Piquet: Band of Brothers Shattered Lances Strategos Tactica The Art of War The Die Is Cast The Shock of Impact Vis Bellica Warhammer Ancient Battles Warlord Warmaster Ancients Warrior WRG ancients 6th edition WRG ancients 7th edition Other (incl. homebrew) Comments and suggestions for additions/subtractions are welcomed. Cheers, Scott |

Given the number of rule sets out there, my personal preference would be to limit the poll to those written specifically for historical ancient and/or medieval periods, rather than fantasy crossovers. That is why, for example, HOTT and the original Mighty Armies are not on the list, either. Those who prefer using fantasy or crossover rules for ancient-medieval wargaming could always choose "Other" and list their preference in the accompanying discussion thread. IMHO, at least. I use Lord of the Rings for dark ages and medieval. You should also add War of the Ring to the list. |

I think splitting "Homebrew" away from "Using Fantasy Rules" would be a good idea. |

But I really think this is two polls – one for ancients and one for medievals. That makes a great deal of sense to me. So, an updated "Most-Played Ancients Rules" poll would include: Ancient & Medieval Wargaming Ancient Warfare Arcane Battle Composer Arcane Warfare Armati Basic Impetus Casus Belli Classical Hack Commands & Colors: Ancients Conquerors and Kings Crusader De Bellis Antiquitatis De Bellis Multitudinis De Bellis Magistrorum Militum Field of Glory Holy Hack Homeric Hack Hoplomachia Hoplon Impetus Justified Ancients King David l'Art de la Guerre Legion and Empire Lost Battles Might of Arms Mighty Armies: Ancients Piquet: Archon Strategos Tactica The Art of War The Die Is Cast The Shock of Impact Vis Bellica Warhammer Ancient Battles Warlord Warmaster Ancients Warrior WRG ancients 6th edition WRG ancients 7th edition Other: Historical Other: Fantasy Other: House Rules |
