Man, hard to find info…

So I have some guys who are wearing bicorns…

There is an edge around the top; would this be white on all of them, or just the officers, with it being black on the regular troops?

Also, they have the usual yellow and black… thingie… on their hats. What is the thing sticking out of the top? Green? Or yellow?

Sorry for the lack of ANY form of proper terminology… Austrians are WAY beyond me:)

Thanks for any help!

Austrian gunners wore bicornes, but they were not edged. The "thingie" on top is called a plume. It was black, with a yellow over green tuft at the base where it met the top of the hat. The plume was removable, which meant when not on parade, it could frequently be missing. Scroll down for a picture:

Hmm… see, the plume my guys have is awful short; it actually almost looks like… a leafy plant? That was why I was unsure exactly what the heck I was looking at.

As for not being edged… it looks in the pictures you linked that they ARE edged… either white or yellow, but I cannot tell which..

Anyway…. thanks for the help:)

The edge you see is more the artist's way of emphasizing details. I have other references, but not on-line. Most of the plume could have broken off or been poorly molded.

Hm. Okay. Do the OFFICERS have colored edges? I was looking at a print and it seemed they did…?

Normal troopers = no edge. Officers = golden edge.

The "leafy" thing you see might very well be just that, an oak leaf; the Austrian army had kept the old tradition of attaching a leaf to their hats/helmets (it used to be to recognize friends from foes). I just paint it green.

I would say that the 'leafy thing' is an oak leaf, the traditional Hapsburg field sign. If the yellow over black plume is removed then that would be the only thing left. If the cockade is there then that would be yellow centred black (it was often a metal version).

Yes, I had forgotten about the oak leaf. Good call.

If anyone wants to critique…?

I think the "leafy thing" is a sprig of green foliage called a Feldzeichen.
