Just making up a quick background questionnaire for the new 'baby' character campaign we'll start tomorrow night. I'd like the characters to have some general ideas of who and what their characters are, so I'm putting together a little form to encourage them to think a little about these folks, and not make them clones of every other character they've played. Besides the general what is your name, what is your reason for adventuring, who is your family, etc. type of question, what sorts of things would you ask? |

In a fantasy environment, I would really like to know the character's religious beliefs, and how involved they are in their religion. Gods and temples are there for everyone, not just the Clerics. |

What is thier greatest fear/ what are they most afraid of? What are they willing to do/how far would they go to t makes complete a goal or dream? What is 1 thing they will absolutely not tolerate? What is the 1 thing that makes all mushbrained and weak in the knees? ex: hot elf chics, huge piles of gold Always fun to throw some of those in the campain when they least expect it. |

I find these writing guides are often helpful for questions like that, though obviously not all of them apply to gaming. 100 Character Development Questions link Developing Memorable Characters: 45 Questions to Create Backstories link |

What actor/actress would they like to play their player character. Get the players to write down (in secret) what their character thinks of the others and why. You might get something interesting you can use in the game. |

Are your players already familiar with the background of your campaign? The best AD&D game I was ever involved with was GMed by a guy who wanted to be a novelist. Before making characters for his campaign, he would give you this packet of dossiers on his world. One covered religion, one geography, one the calendar, one coinage, etc. Those sorts of resources made it very easy to come up with a character background. |
