Does anyone what size drill Bit I need for wire spears

Can anyone recommend a base size for my Vikings …. I would like to do them individual and then make a movement tray.

1) Depends on scale of miniatures. Usually the wire is 1/32 so the same size drill bit should suffice – after drilling through you may want to run the bit in and out a bit to widen the hole slightly.

2) Use 20mm square bases, same as Warhammer.

sorry there 28mm Grippingbeast Vikings

But I was thinking of using them to mount flags for my 18mm also

Easiest to just buy a set of small bits. Usually come with a carrying case.

Except that you will need a *lot* of the specific bits you actually use. Even with proper care, they break.

First, figure out what gauge wire you're going to use. I use brass rod, which conveniently is sold in fractional sizes.

Then it's a good idea to have a wire/bit gauge. This is a pice of steel with holes drilled in it. It will tell you what size bit corresponds with your wire.

Then a set of micro-reamers is a good idea. They can widen the drilled hole slightly, especially at the nends, for easier insertion.

A good starting point that I use:

15/18mm figs – .025" or .64mm Bit size

25/28mm figs – .032" or .81mm Bit size

I may take that up, or down 2 sizes depending on the actuall size of the figure's hands! The smaller 15/18mm figs tend to have smaller hands, so maybe .62mm or .60mm Bit size. For the larger 25/28mm figures a .84mm to .86mm bit may be better for things like pike, or heavy throwing spears.

I generally use brass rod, and the above starting numbers I've found as a good reference point for flag poles, javelins, and the like. Heavier weapons may vary!!

You're welcome, and as Allen says I always order the various bit sizes that I use a half dozen or so at a time as they always break when you really least need them to!!!

28mm figures look good if you use straightened paper clips! They have a neat, rough finished look to them. I then tap the end flat and snip both sides to a point (sometimes using a file to take the "sting" out of the acute point). As paper clips are not a gauge I don't recall off-hand what drill bit to use (and I didn't use one, because OG figures come with the hand open, and you just give it a little pinch to secure the spear before gluing).

20mm bases are the best for single basing….

Interesting thought Doug reference the paperclips… I am going to have to experiment now.

Agreed 20mm single bases for 28mm figs. I use MDF cut to size then a PVA mix topped with sand and faux grass.
