Those elephants look realy impressive! I think I can use a few of them for my Seleucids. How do they look, compared to Vendel elephants, of which I have a few already?

I'm afraid I am Vendeless. Myabe JJ could give a view? Simon |

I've been considering this very problem, lately. The Aventine elephant looks to be more realistically proportioned from a size-ratio perspective. Obviously, elephants differ in size just like us, though. African elephants can be up to 12 feet at the shoulder (approximately 56mm). They both seem to work well. The Empire head does look a bit big. Steve cavalcadewargames.com nycjadie.wordpress.com |

The Aventine elephant is not smallish.. it's tall
but its proportions are better than anything else. The head is a reasonable size. The Vendel isn't that much bigger, but its head is enormous, is walking like a drunken pig, and has this dangling derrier issue. I'm happy with how the Vendel elephant eventually turned out
but I can tell I'm going to be way happier with the Aventine models, when their Successor versions are released. JJ |

Reading JJartists comment, I think Vendel would be fairly well the same size as the Empire elephant. As the size of Avantine and Empire is almost identical, except for the big head, which the Vendel elephant also got. |

The Empire Models elephant is also around 1cm longer in the body than Aventine's. It's interesting that most manufacturers use the species maximun size for their beasts. I'd imagine that there must be quite a degree of size variation in mature elephants, so it might be a good idea to mix the elephants of different manufacturers, where the build or howdah is at least similar, to get some smaller beasts. I might buy a Newline or two at some stage, for example. It might also be fun to swap heads between the different ranges

Damn you Simon! My Baktrians were on the back – burner now I see this thread! I have already ordered from Keith and hope to get chopping presently. Plans include some head transplants, scratchbuilt howdahs and some detail work on the crews (drawn from different ranges) Should be fun. |

Hi Diocletian, the fact that the Aventines come with separate heads is a real boon. I'm also doing some conversion work on various elephants I have; it's a bit like "the Island of Doctor Moreau", here: link Hi Mike! Simon |

Simon. in the rules that you are using for Zama have special nellie rules? The guys that I game with, once used a set of rules that if one elephant died in a unit 2 or 3 to a unit that they would stop one turn to mourn the loss of the one killed! It was also mention in one of the ancient book that I read a long time ago! Do you or anyone else know if it is true? Cheers Mike Adams |

I like the Aventine proportions over any other models. Even though the Aventine's are a bit big in heroic 28mm scale, their models are worth it. The crewmen are superb. I too am doing some head swaps for my Epirote replacement beastie. (Since David Daly is now the owner of the Vendel model, thanks to his winning the auction :) JJ |

"It was also mention in one of the ancient book that I read a long time ago! Do you or anyone else know if it is true?" All sorts of random events could happen with elephants and their mahouts. Actually the old Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition monster chart is probably a better way to do it
the elephant can stay put, or stampede. It actually seemed to be a better way than the somewhat vanilla WAB 1-1.5 stampede rules, without adding much more complexity. JJ |

Hi Mike, I don't recall that account. In our rules, though, elephants regularly rout leading to mourning amongst the units behind them! I think they will be almost as deadly to the Carthos as the Romans. We will tone them down from the regular C&CA rules as the elephants at Zama were poorly trained, and performed badly on the day. I also think that the impact of elephants is a bit overstated in C&CA. Cheers, Simon |
