Hi all,

I have been an avid miniature collector for decades but have been very slow to take up actual gaming with my miniatures, having preferred to play strategy board games as appose to building an army and fielding it. I have got over this and am at present working on two armies for the WOTR period to represent both factions and have painted up a large number of 15mm figures. I am now stuck on how best to base the miniatures!!??

Having looked in to three sets of rules that seem to have good reviews; (These being; Warmaster ancient battles, Impetus and Bloody barons by Peter pig) I am stuck as they all have different basing requirements. Does this really matter? I was thinking of buying 3cm squared bases and putting 3 figures on each base. This suits the bloody baron's rules but will it then stop me from being able to play other rules sets if I want? The reason I ask is I am considering buying all three sets of rules to add greater variation in my games. If there is a happy medium way for me to base my figures to get round the different requirements in each game I would be keen to hear your thoughts.

Your advice and assistance is greatly appreciated. Also any reviews of the rules mentioned would be great.

Regards

Chris

3 15mm figures on a 3cm square base will look rather strange I think. Surely you'd want 4 (two ranks of 2) or even 6 if close order foot on that size base.

But generally it doesn't matter if you're providing both armies. For example, you could use 6 (3 wide, two deep) 3cm square bases to be a unit in Impetus.

"For example, you could use 6 (3 wide, two deep) 3cm square bases to be a unit in Impetus."

Trying to fit 2 rows of 3 15mm figures onto a 3cm square base might be tricky with some manufacturer's ranges.

I'd suggest 2 rows of 2 might be easier.

I don't have Bloody Barons, but IMHO I would go with the most "popular" basing style (WRG) rather than some "special" basing style. Typically, basing style is less important if you provide all the armies, and they are based the same.

Bloody barons is an excellent game, and definately recommend it for WOTR. However WRG basing is far more widely used and as long as both sides are based the same in BB, then it doesnt really matter that they are not on 30mm squares. If you are doing Y and L for WOTR, I would go will the 40mm x 15 or 20mm for WRG

I would base them 40mm wide. You can play Impetous with two stand togther miking them 80mm wide stands. And you play Warmaster Ancients with 40mm wide which is the recommemded size with 15mm. You also play FOG, DBM and DBA with 40mm. You probladly be able to play Bloody Barons with 40mm stands. It woulld be hard to get three knights across on 30mm stands.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys.

Having taken in your comments I am now thinking of using the 40mm x 30mm bases. I have drawn up a quick, scale diagram and am looking at basing 5 miniatures per base; two in the front rank and three in the rear, then reversing the order to three in front, two in back for the bases either side. Do you think that will look OK or do you think 6 figures per base will look better? Personally I think 6 figures may look too congested with some of the figure ranges I have bought but would appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers

Chris

6 figures per base will look better – and mean you don't have to fiddle about making sure you've got them in the right order.

Thanks Mike.

To get maximum use from your based figures, base the footmen on a 40x15mm base, and the archers on a 40x20mm base, 3 or 4 figures per base. Cav 3 figs on a 40x30mm base. Light horse (if any) on a 40x30mm base with 2 figs. This will make them usable for dba/dbm/dbmm/fog etc

I rebased my WOR armies for Bloody Barons years ago.I only used 2 mounted per base though. Perfectly usable for impetus using a sabot and I still play DBA as well- after all if you have both armies and they are only likely to be fighting each other it doesn't really matter what other armies are using.

30 mm square with the foot 2 x 2 looks vastly better IMHO than the DBA/M/MM/FOG version.
