Anybody have any clues as to where I could get an OOB of the Austrian forces that operated in Bohemia and Saxony in 1809. The force included the Brunswick Black Horde, which I have an OOB for, but have nothing on the Austrian forces. Also included the Kurheissichen Korps of the deposed prince of Hesse-Kassel – agin no OOB for them either.

Maybe the John Gill set on Napoleon on the Danube?

'The Napoleonic Wars Data Book' by Digby Smith. I got mine cheap on ebay.

I have a copy of Gill's Thunder on the Danube in my briefcase and while it has extensive OOB data, I did not see mention of the Brunswick Black Band. I thought that they were marching towards the Hapsburg lands when they received the news of Wagram, and then they had to high-tail it back to Brunswick and eventual evacuation by the British Navy.

I thought that they were marching towards the Hapsburg lands when they received the news of Wagram, and then they had to high-tail it back to Brunswick and eventual evacuation by the British Navy.

Quite so when the armisitice was signed the Duke refused to be bound by it and took himself and his men off to the coast to take ship with the British. Fighting a couple of actions along the way against Westphalian troops. Prior to that they were involved in action with the Austrians in Bohemia and Saxony including brief occupations of Dresden and Leipzig against Saxon and Westphalian forces. The force for this raid was apparently 10,000 men composed of Austrian line, landwehr, Brunswickers and Hessians. I have an OOB for the Brunswickers, but not the rest.
This whole sideshow to the main action is fascinating story involving some very interesting forces including a rogue Prussian hussar regiment and would make an ideal mini campaign. Thanks for the tip re Digby Smith's book. I have the relevant Gill book, but it doesn't have an OOB for the Austrians only for the Saxon/Westphalian forces.

Sorry, there was a totally alien text that crept in.

What I meant to write was: There was a regiment of lancers among the Austrian force. It would seem some of them didn't like the armistice either, because suddenly the Black Duke had a troop of lancers among his band, in Austrian uniforms…

Major Schill's ride could make for an interesting mini-campaign. I'll try and dig up more details.

Fred,

Do you have Gill's "With Eagles to Glory?" The chapter "The Merry Monarch's Men" covers the topic, and end note 74 provides the OOB, including the Kur-Hessian Legion. If you need it, I can type it in for you.

Also, Gill wrote up the Battle of Gefrees in First Empire magazine 12 with a letter following up in #15.

Let me know if you need more.
