If you were to game it in 15mm . . . 1) Which version would you game? The 1984 film or the 2010 remake? 2) What specific figures would you get? 3) What vehicles? 4) What sort of skirmish scenarios would you play? 5) What rules would you use? Thanks. CC TMP link TMP link TMP link |

There's a re-make? Seriously, I did not know until your post, CC – I see that it is no more Mr Nice guy with the Chinese, they are the bad guys in this movie I would use the re-make – there are some Chinese vehicles by QRF and in 15mm you could use Soviet Motor rifles for the troops – if you want the original, Old Glory has lots Skirmish scenarios? Sweep and clear – Red Quick Reaction Force moving through a town insurgent-hunting Convoy ambush – clear enough Dig 'em out – Red Special Forces assaulting insurgents hiding in the hills Rules – not my forte, but I think there are lots of Modern skirmish rules out there – Ambush Alley springs to mind |

Not 15mm, but use the Mongoose Battlefield Evolution figs. They do a futuristic PLA and American forces. You can use the Mideast and Brit forces for militia. :) |

Is the new film set in Michigan or just being filmed in Michigan? If the former, I could have fun selecting locations for conventional or insurgent actions. I have been curious about the modern Chinese military, but never had an appealing hypothetical construct to build a miniature force and create scenarios. Being a native Michigander, perhaps this is just the thing to grab my interest. Mark |

1984. Soviet troops from QRF; vehicles from QRF, OG, Peter Pig and Quality castings. Wolverines from PeterPig AK47/modern Africa line. |
CmdrKiley | 05 Oct 2009 1:53 p.m. PST |
It's being filmed in Michigan, looks like Pontiac, Royal Oak, and Mount Clemens. However based on a newspaper box on one of the sets, I think it takes place in Spokane Washington. This would make sense if only part of the US was occupied. |
CmdrKiley | 05 Oct 2009 1:55 p.m. PST |
It would be a lot easier doing the 1984 version as there's lots of Soviet equipment out there in most scales. Getting anything Chinese in one particular scale is more difficult. |
Pizzagrenadier | 05 Oct 2009 1:59 p.m. PST |
I would do the 1984 version and game parts of the war the characters talked about but did not participate in though probably also some of the insurgent stuff as well. I was planning on using 20mm Liberation minis for this because they have so many armed civilians with AKs, RPDs, M-16s, RPGs etc. etc. Haven't done much looking into what vehicle kits I would use, but probably a large selection already out there. Lots of civilian vehicles as well (die cast). I would use HO model RR buildings which would give a huge variety of American types of houses, stores, gas stations, clutter such as trash cans, mailboxes, etc. etc. I already own the other scenery of trees, hills, rocks, fields, roads and everything else needed. I might even model some of the fighting in and around my local area for fun. Maybe the local Warwick Warriors take up arms against the Reds
Rules would be our own modern supplement called Seek Out Close with and Destroy (platoon level modern combat) though I might also use a 1:1 scale man to man variant I am working on or the pulp version of the rules Jayson is working on
So basically I have already thought about this can't you tell? |

What Irishserb said for miniatures. For rules probably Ambush Alley and Force on Force. This subject has gotten quite a bit of discussion on the AA Games forum. |

There are some cool ideas here. But I'd prefer using 28mm and would definately go with THW's FNG: Unconventional Warfare. |

I'd think about the Sahadeen Infantry from Rebel Minis. They've got a pretty good "insurgent" look to them. |

"No one makes any Chinese in 15mm a much missed opportunity ..!" Waitasecond! I thought I saw someone coming out with a line of modern PLA in the last couple of months. They were all wearing the new Fritz-ish helmets and were armed with bullpups. I just can't remember now which company was doing it. |

I cannot answer most of your questions because I have never played any modern (for circa 1980's) miniatures games, so I am not familiar with any rules for this nor am I familiar with any manufacturers of miniatures for that era of for this ear (for the Chinese). However, I would most definitely not limit myself to 1984 or 2010. I would start with gaming the original series and eventually expand my collection of miniatures so I could fight some 2010 battles. As for scenarios, I would definitely fight some of the battles in the movie, such as the ambush of the vehicle convoy and the ambush of the patrol when the Soviets/Cubans were looking for the transmitter. I think, though, that this would be best played out as a campaign. |

Yeah, I thought there was some modern 28mm Chinese greens I saw posted a few weeks back. 28mm would be great. Use Plasticville buildings for that small mid-west town feel and then cover them with communist posters. |

Dan, if you add the "Sepelvedan Freedom Fighters" to your Rebel Minis Survivalists I think youll have a good base of minis for the Resistance. In regards to the above question, I dont think we will see any of the Eureka Moderns, except maybe the Russians, any time soon. That is, unless sales dramatically increase for one of the lines. I hope the PLA does better sales. Im quite pleased with how the Chechens and Russians are moving along. Hopefully, the Russians will cross the finish line by Christmas and we will see them in production by mid 2011. Keep spreading the good word! |

Awesome! As for scenario ideas that involve Wolverines with some weapons experience already under their belts, this is what I come up with: Night raid the concentration camp Rescue group about to be executed along roadside Night hit and run of fuel depot at airport Night attack on supply train Anything else I may have missed? Dan PS. Also, don't you think that, in each of those situations, the original Wolverines would be supported by additional, less experienced recruits? |
badger22 | 09 Nov 2010 9:41 p.m. PST |
CC, of course they would. But to many charecters running around on the movie set gets hard to keep track off, so they just where not in the movie. But no reason not to include them in a game. Owen |

I think this shows the wide variety of camo in use – as with all armed forces I think the standard woodland camo is now regarded to be a bit 'common' and most of the people i saw in Shanghai and Beijing (officers) were either in Digital or semi desert link see also the below – which then goes on to comment though that maybe they have sevral sets for different seasons (which is more than many British troops have had in the past!) link Still they should be good at uniform making as apparently they are doing the new British Army ones for us |
