We have just completed this range, it includes the King's Elephant and four towered beasts. There are two different bodies with two different tower+ crew. Sorry As these have just been cast there are no painted examples yet.

Cor! Love the towers, especially the first one.

Thus are truly exquisite figures. But why Sassanid? The rest of your figure line would seem to be closer to the period of the Successors than the Sassanids.

Fantastic! Never thought about a 28mm Sassanid army – until now!!

We are doing all our elephants in one go. The Sassanids were ready first. Next up Pyrrhic and the rest of the Macedonian then Seleucid. We are also going to do an African but it will be a while as we are going to start the Rep. Romans at the same time.

Keith – good job, great to see these in the flesh so to speak. Handy to see the unarmoured archer crew to compare them with the armoured ones.

When I first saw these I thought just how many elephants can one field! I suspect they will 'tower' over my existing Hinchliffe ones so will need at least two on their own! One with howdah 'hides' and one without to add variety was my thinking.

Simon – do you know how they match up with the Empire beasts. Looking at the one of these I have, it simply dwarfs Hinchliffe's Macedonian elephant. I was hoping that it would be a reasonable match with Aventine's version, to be released soon I hope? Not having heard from Mario at Empire I may have to order my howdah crew from Essex to complete the thumpie.

Hi Garry,

I will take a pic of my unpainted Aventine nellie next to the Empire one in the next day or so, for size comparison purposes.

If you need spare crewmen, it might be worth waiting a while to see what Aventine come up with. I gather that the rest of their elephants will be trotting into view shortly; I'm very interested to see the Pyrrhic and Africans.

Thanks – the comparative shot will be most useful.

Your point about Aventine is also timely. Years ago I ordered some Essex Alexandrian/early Macedonian crew for 2 plastic elephants I had picked up – single pikeman astride and mahout. They are as large as Empire and nice figures. Ironically the plastic nellies are similar in size to the Empire one!

Hi Garry,

It'll be interesting to see the Aventine early Macedonian elephants, too. I recall armies in the '80s using the Britains baby African elephant, with metal crew.

I'm sure Keith will flog you some seperate crew, if you ask nicely! Not that they will be cast just yet, I'd imagine.

Simon is right, when ready I will sell you crew if you want.

Pyrrhic elephant next week, if all goes to plan then the early Macedonian ones astride.

Simon

Thanks for the comparison. Confirms my view that the Hinchliffe nellies need to be 'separated' from these new beasts! My Empire example will be able to 'mix in' with the Aventine guys.

My current armoured Macedonians from Hinchliffe stand 40mm or so tall with another 20mm for the tower! The Sasanids are similar.

Just means that more elephants are needed!

Keith – being able to buy the crew separately is very kind of you.

Cheers
