Too long waiting for "Over the Top" from WH…
Has anyone some intelligence about the "possible" army list for the Americans?
Also, on a more historical hand, can someone tell how many platoons did an american company of 1917/18 number?
Thanks and cheers to all.

Here is the information I have on WW1 U.S. organization (YMMV):

4 Rifle Platoons per Company, each:
1x Platoon HQ (1 officer, 5 men)
1x Bomber Squad (12 men w/ grenades)
1x Rifle Grenade Squad (9 men w/ 3 RG launchers)
1x Rifle Squad (17 men)
1x Automaric Rifle Squad (15 men w/ 4 Chauchat)

Marine and Army platoons were the same, only outside support weapons differed. Hope this helps. I can't garuantee this is completely accurate, but it shouldn't be off by too much…

Hi,

(Sorry to open up a two months old thread.)

From On Infantry (English/Gudmundsson) I understand that tne Squads listed above were actually Sections. The idea was that before a battle specialists from the different Sections were combined into Squads. It also mentions that this didn't work well in practice, especially since the stalemate had ended and there were no several weeks of preparation available before each battle to divide soldiers/NCOs into squads. Not sure exactly what they did instead, but probably not go into battle with the specialists in different Squads (ie one grenade squad, one rifle squad etc, like in the list above) at least. Maybe they permanently mixed the men from the Sections into Squads? I have tried to find out from various books, but there are not often mentions of tactics at that low level.
