Looking at a cheapo book including a bunch of Profile views, the RAF Letter Codes on the fuselage sides (WW II) were probably based on some kind of system;

XX (Roundel) X?

So, where is a link to an article about the sytem, or give me a Q&D; Did all the aircraft in a unit (Squadron) carry the same code,

The double X is the squadron, the single X is the aircraft:

My understanding is, the double letters is the squadron number and the single letter represents a plane within the squadron.

Check this here: link

I think it will give you the info you desire on the codes

And, if I recall, Wing Commanders could use their initials in place of the squadron code.

Hi

not just wing commanders, but notable pilots. Some units adopted the german practice of having the better pilots lead in the air regardless of rank, and the initials aided in forming.

Rocky – Can you name a few of these notable pilots under the rank of Wing Commander? I've never seen any photos of aircraft with personalised codes that were "owned" by an officer under that rank, unless you count Guy Gibson's Lancaster on the dams raid, which still had the AJ squadron code, but G as the individual letter.
