On the french light battlions, on the shako, what color was the chassuer pom poms? Were they green, yellow, or another color? Thanks. |

I think they were light blue for center companies, green for the chasseurs and red for the carabiniers. But, someone who knows for sure will post, so wait for that. I am just testing my memory. |

There were considerable variations but typically: Chasseurs 1st Company: green 2nd Company: light blue 3rd Company: aurore 4th Company: violet Carabiniers: red Voltigeurs: yellow |

Reggie, I concur with Rjabox above, there were obviously many regimental variations, not to mention the inevitable local supply difficulties, but my understanding is that in general, as far as the shako pom poms went there was no difference to the Line company distinctions for the centre companies which rjabox outlines above. Kind regards, Sparker |

It all depend on the year and the unit. Initially, most chasseurs companies used green but they officially changed to the four colour company distinctions at the same time as the line regiments. However, this being the French army, the whims of regimental commanders may well have resulted in some units retaining green. The same applies to the wearing of epaulettes by the chasseurs companies. |

Colinjallen is quite right. The order for different colour pom poms for centre companies (as listed above) was only given in 1811 and such orders were often slow to be followed if at all. Just to avoid any confusion the chasseurs you were asking about were the centre companies (fusiliers in the line infantry. The light company was voltigeurs (same as line infantry) and the carabiniers were the light equivalent of line grenadiers. |
