I need to buy a few 20mm SU-76Ms, and I'm thinking about getting them from SHQ. Any comments on how good these models are, or better alternatives?

personally I'd go the Britannia one stick the barrel in and paint especially if you are just using it for wargames.

Got the Britannia ones..they are good, the fighting compartment seems a bit roomy, so they need crew/cammo etc to crowd it they are a four piece model, the ShQ one will probably be more like 30 pieces which won't fit together properly.

I'm kinda fond of the UM kit myself…

Me too, these are mine with some minor detailing and Millicast and AB crews:

However, they require a fair bit of construction. One of my buddies had some SHQ models which I looked at while they were unassembled and they looked pretty good, I must say.

I also have the Britannia ones and they are now only 2 pieces and they are nice pieces. Some have recently been added to my fictious African state That the boys over at the Guild have inspired me to do.

Also, aren't SHQ 1/76th where Britannia 1/72 ?
