Here's the Lord of Undeath himself, Orcus. Reaper minis.

Orcus figures heavily into the end of the D&D campaign I'm running. We are going to finish Dungeon magazine's Savage Tide adventure path soon. I was compelled to go buy all the demon lords that appear in the finale. I'll be painting more of them soon.

I wanted to put him on a big base because he's "Huge" in D&D 3.5 and I wanted his base to cover the squares it needed to. This left me with a bunch of space on the base I didn't just want to flock. I had this pack of three Reaper Warlord zombies emerging from the ground that I had never painted, so I threw them onto the base too.

The cool thing is that in D&D 4e, which I'll be starting soon, Orcus has this aura that slows all movement because the dead rise from the ground and tug at the living. I thought this was a nice representation of that effect.

Nicely done. Do you paint up all the figures for the adventures you are about to run? I'm thinking about finding away to motivate myself to paint the rpg figs I have in such a manner. Any tips?

Hexxenhammer24 Sep 2009 7:43 p.m. PST

I try to use painted figs when I can. But it's really hard. I make sure the PC's have painted minis and that recurring npc's and big bads have painted minis.

I'm not as concerned that every orc or skeleton is painted. And really, if you're using a published adventure, it's going to be hard to have minis for every wacky-ass monster encountered.

To get around that, I picked a bunch of common and uncommon large and huge D&D Miniatures monsters. My $1.00 USD plastic hill giants and $5.00 USD huge carrion crawler have been getting a workout. They stand in well for just about anything.

But for the end of this campaign, fighting demon lords at 20th level, I wanted cool minis.

Really nice, I always liked Orcus. I have the old Grenadier version and really love it.

Ditto on the Grenadier one. They had some sculpts that really withstood the test of time.

Im running the D&D3.5 adventure 'Expedition to the Demonweb Pits'. The finale is loads of Aspects of Demonlords so I've been hunting around for cool Demogorgon, Grazzt and Lolth figures and an assortment of others!

Your Orcus looks a treat and the zombies look cool too! I'd be really happy to be fighting him! (Just remember to keep an escape route for him so he can plot his revenge!)

We do the same thing for our games – painting characters and NPCs and slowly getting basic figures which we proxy for other types as we need them. I dont have many figures for all the different demon foot soldier types, but a box of GW Bloodletters covers most and then Orcs, Beastmen and various others represent the other demons as needed. As long as the players can identify what is what (i.e which ones hand out the most pain) then they are happy…

Reaper should have all of those, Swordlord. Demogorgon is the big bad for my campaign.

I have this Demogorgon. He's pretty cool. I wish the tentacle were a bit more active, but it's a one piece sculpt.

Oh, and Orcus is one of the good guys at the end of this campaign. He teams up with the PC's to stop a plot by Demogorgon. The PC's just made their deal with him in our last session.
