I just posted my review of 1-48 Combat figures being sold by Baueda. Note that I'm not looking at the rules here, I'll hit them later, just the miniatures.

Promised someone I'd post it up, and some will think they're too steep, but consider the price to play the game – the price I paid was for two armies, Soviet and German.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik24 Sep 2009 8:28 p.m. PST

Nice review. The scenic bases also make them suitable for dioramas.

Ditto Tango 2 124 Sep 2009 9:16 p.m. PST

They seem to be done in the finest 28mm style…. They shouldn't be sold as 1:48 because those weapons ain't anything like in scale.

Nicely done review though and great painting.

Thanks guys!

Tim – yeah, I do mention that in there. Weapons and hands are a bit out of scale. The weapons I can see as a protective mechanism – 1:48th the thickness of a Kar98K is tiny and fragile – but the hands? Could be gloves, I suppose.

Still, absolutely beautiful figures and so fun to paint up that when I was about done I (tongue in cheek) offered to paint them for someone on the 1-48Combat Yahoo group that was looking for prepaints ;-).

WW2Fanatik – Great minds and all… I was pondering ways to put one of those building corners into a diorama with a wrecked 1:48th T-34. Would look very sweet.

Nice review but I don't care for those figures at all. Compare then to Tamiya 1/48 figures and they suffer a lot. I'm still intrigued by the rules though (great if you could do a review of them too!) and the idea of supplying the scenic bases is quite cool.

Surferdude25 Sep 2009 4:45 a.m. PST

I can't see how the figures are worth the money no matter which way one looks at it – they look like big 28mm and don't have the detail or character of a lot of the 36mm ..1/48 figures out there.

The rules are pretty basic as well so certainly one is not paying for that and the cards in the amount they are buying them for would add very little to the 'price'… I would expect far more for my money – compare them to the Okko models which are again very expensive but at least look like detailed models.

As for the scenic bases – I personally hate little bits of the city moving around witht the figure!

nazrat25 Sep 2009 6:42 a.m. PST

Yeah, it doesn't seem like any kind of value for the money. "Free" rules with $15 USD a pop models that come with unusable scenic bases? I think not!

The GM25 Sep 2009 8:16 a.m. PST

The scenic bases don't move, they're partial cover for any character that hops into them. While that doesn't change a thing about the rest of the comments, at least they're not moving about the board "Hey, is that Pavlov's house going down the street?" would be amusing.

SBminisguy25 Sep 2009 8:33 a.m. PST

$15 USD for an *unpainted* figure at that!! Seems hard to justify.

willievonluck25 Sep 2009 9:52 a.m. PST

The figures do appear to be out of scale…way out of scale. I don't understand the desire to make the soldiers look fat. The "easier to paint" excuse is silly IMO.

Arrigo25 Sep 2009 10:55 a.m. PST

unimpressed… and this is a kind comment.

Sometime we get some subpar over-hyped stuff…

The GM25 Sep 2009 1:50 p.m. PST

Wow Arrigo, I've got a pretty big collection of 28mm stuff… And sub-par is a bit strong for these, they're not Stronghold quality after all.

WillievonLuck – Maybe I wasn't clear in the text… The figures appear to be layered-clothing thick, and the two snipers don't have the thick legs everyone else does, so it definitely appears to be on purpose. I honestly like the look for the topic at hand – Stalingrad.

But it is pronounced enough that some might not like it, no doubt some won't like it when combined with large weapons.

For $15 USD a pop, they had better paint themselves … and to a good standard, too!

I is a clear sign that 1/48 is they way to go!!!
Gamers can have 28mm collections,(I do)but is is great to have 1/48 figures to go with all the vehicles and tanks produced at this scale!

Shriver25 Sep 2009 7:07 p.m. PST

baueda has some nice terrain coming out but these figures do not appeal to me at all.

GOTHIC LINE MINIATURES26 Sep 2009 4:40 p.m. PST

The guns might be a bit thick but is is better like this than the broken gun tip problem!
It is a different approach to wargames(including a bit of scenery). And selling one figure alone!
I am really in doubt here would a pack of the usual 4 be enough???
I have heard something about selling packs of 5…

The GM27 Sep 2009 9:37 a.m. PST

@Lusitanus =>The initial release was six per side – when I ordered I told them to send me the minimum playset, which they told me was four per side. I'll let you know how it goes with four when I test out the rules.

Thank you very much Don,it will be good to realize what is on the market. My question was connected to my own wargames48.blogspot.com
First I did consider 4 per pack but who knows now???

Nice Lusitanus, I had not perused your site before. Those first shots of pre-production figures are pretty, looking forward to your official launch.

No matter what the pack size, if people are building squads it won't be right ;-). Just because they don't have even multiples in a squad, and most countries varied squad size by branch.

So I would package based on price. How many can you offer for a reasonable price? That's the number I'd go with. And an alternate packaging by squad would be cool.

Hope that helps, no doubt you've thought through it already.

RE: Crete, the Avalon Hill game Air Assault on Crete has some information about vehicles used on both side, but I don't know how accurate it is… Might help though.

If you want to expand the terrain pieces into dioramas etc, just use some of the 1/48th Tamiya plastic kits. You can get oil drums, signs and brick walls very easily. We stock them (grin)

We have been considering getting some of the Baueda figures into stock as we do carry a large range of 1/48th figures already and we hope to inspect some at Derby this weekend so we can compare sizes and make a final decision

Thanks Don for the useful overview of the range so far

Long as you're here… I'll ask quick. I'm doing a German review and have North Star figures. Are you/have you changed them in any way? Packaging (number), removing figures, etc?

If not, I'll keep these and mention that you've bought them. If you have, I'll pop out and order one of your packs and include them instead. It's a big review, so I've been procrastinating ;-).

Scarab Miniatures28 Sep 2009 11:42 p.m. PST

Don missed this last night.

Currently not made any changes except took lots of new photos. There are some new late war (1945) packs and another pack to come (MP40s) once we have got some moulds made.

The range is now Scarab WW2 1/48th and we have a logo being created (you can see it in our battlegames advert if you get that magazine) you can read more about our plans in the projekt x section of the web site. projektx.scaraminiatures.com

Finally we will be putting together some unit deals in the coming months and adding new packs to the range (Command and mortars to start with)

Hope that helps

thank you!

Sorry for the fuzzy black & white pictures:an experience to resemble WW2 real images see???
I think in 1-2 weeks there will be serious pictures of the figures painted and in scenario simulations so please stay tuned and please drop a line or 2 ok???

crowjane03 Oct 2009 4:50 a.m. PST

Guys, I read your comments, but I still think that it's a deal to get a good quality miniature, a piece of scenario, the card, and a range of lead counters for 15$. of course you're not paying for the rules (they're simple but fun!) since they're free to download on the website.
1-48combat.com/rules.htm but the miniatures are accurate in my opinion, especially in relation to the Stalingrad setting.
The "fat" look is due to the soldiers wearing layers of clothes under the uniforms. one of the snipers also wears bed-sheets to camouflage in the snow.. very nice in my opinion, devil's in the details after all.

superfire03 Oct 2009 10:06 a.m. PST

I really like this new game.
Not the usual "anonymous" miniatures…and not the usual zombies/nazis!
I'm a wargamer and collector and I'm very happy to see something "cool" about WWII
