I am about to start building the Prussian 1st Brigade of the 1st Corps from August 1813, a formation which contains the following grenadier battalions: Leib Grenadiers West Prussian Grenadiers Silesian Grenadiers 1st East Prussian Grenadiers. My assumption is that the companies forming these battalions wore the facing colours and shoulder-straps of their parent regiments. Can anyone confirm that this is the case and what the shoulder-strap colours were? Thanks, Colin |

Yes, that is true. I think the Calpe web site might contacin the color information which you need. If I can remember tonight I'll look it up and make a later posting. Jim |

For the units in question, two companies of each would have white, the other two, red shoulder straps. Even, evidently in the Leib Grenadiers, who all came from one regiment. Regimental facing (collars and cuffs only) would be red for Leib, Brick Red (crimson) for the West Prussians, Tile Red (so scarlet it's almost orange) for the East Prussians, and Yellow for the Silesians. Turnbacks red for all. If you ever get a hankering to do the other two battalions, the Pommeranians have White facings and white and red shoulder straps, and the 2nd East Prussians have Tile Red facings with sky blue and yellow shoulder straps. |

Many thanks for that; Prussians are well outside my comfort zone! |

Dear Colin The following will give you a comprehensive answer with colour plates. Summerfield (2009) Prussian Infantry 1808-1840: Volume 1 Line and Guard Infantry, Partizan Press Note that the Grenadier Battalions were formed from the two companies from the 11 Line infantry regiments so each pair would have a different colour shoulder strap. It is very logical. Well it is Prussian. Stephen |
