Hi All, Just scanning the Osprey site revealed a series of 6 Men at Arms books about the Confederate army, divided by states. I am sure I have an Osprey book on this subject but it must be American Civil War Armies (1)- Confederate Troops. Has anyone got the series of 6 books, are they any good? Will they tell me much more than the book I have? TY |

I have a couple covering the states my ancestors fought for and they are pretty good, lots of uniform details and a bit of history. Hell, they are Osprey MAAs – do you really need us to find excuses why you need them? |

Of course I need an excuse to buy them so that when I explain to my wife why I spent £60.00 GBP on yet more books I can blame TMP :-) |

The more early-war your gaming, the more useful you'll find them, I believe. |

I have all six and like them, but I am an ACW lunatic and for most gamers the ACW Confederate Army book is plenty fine I agree with the Doc – very useful for early ear, as they have a lot of militia units and the early war units like Georgia's State Navy |

I also carry all of the six plua all of the older 1-5 series on both sides. They sell well. i would not be surprised to see a complied all six volume special edition in the future. |

You could skip them all. They are heavily tilted toward early war, and (IMHO) tend to show the uncommon over the common. I think "Echoes of Glory: Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy" is far more useful. Actual examples of original fabrics and equipment. Whips Osprey any day. |

Thanks for the feedback, all your comments have been really useful. JCBMinis: There appears to be two versions of that book you mentioned on Amazon 2002 and 1992. There's a big price difference. Is the 2002 worth it? |

I agree with JCBMinis. They are useful books for some things, but personally I think they are overpriced for the little bit of information they supply. |

I agree ECHOES OF GLORY is excellent. Isn't one edition paperback? |

I have them all, and I'm glad I have them for their references to uniforms, but they were not nearly as useful as Confederate Infantryman. They are mostly all about uniforms, and often not about general or commonplace stuff, but about a few specific (and often unusual) units. I picked mine up used for only a few dollars each though. If I had paid $15 USD each I would not have been happy with my purchases. As Firezouave said, overpriced for the little bit of info they supply. When I ordered them (online, sight unseen) I thought I would get (for example) a list of all Georgia regiments, when they were mustered in, typical uniforms and equipment, maybe a few paragraphs on notable Georgia generals, where most of the regiments were sent to war, etc. You get none of that. So if you are getting them cheap, they are a nice reference. Otherwise, there are other Osprey ACW titles that are terrific. |
