With regard to 28mm fantasy, what is it that you can't resist collecting? A particular manufacturer? A sculptor's work? A specific race? A particular range? A profession, such as bards or barmaids? |

I mostly do historicals but I have bought a lot of GW LOTR range (300 figures)during the past four years or so. I really like the characters from the films. However, most of the metals were from Ebay. I am thinking about some of the Otherworld figures as they remind me of the Dungeons and Dragons stuff that started me 28 years ago. |

The Grenadier AD&D range. Still missing the Action Art Coatl. Anybody with one to sell or trade, please PM me! |

I have several hunderds of Mithril Miniatures LOTR figures. Sometimes I even paint one! I have 15 of them painted, after ten years of collecting
But I do have several historical armies, which are mostly painted! |

An army/side. I haven't been particularly choosy on which in the past. Perhaps due to that I probably will be in the future. |

Martian Metals when I can find them along with the TSR AD&D range( only need 5712 Fighters, Conan set 2, shield from Conan Set 1 and 2 paint sets and I believe I will have everything that was released) besides them the usual reaper, ral partha, grenadier, heartbreaker, harlequin. Any and all races that strike my interest. |

Zombies, Orcs, Kobolds, goblins, skellies. Civilians (peasantry and all that) |
Parzival | 18 Sep 2009 9:43 a.m. PST |
I was sucked in by GW's LotR range, particularly the Rohirrim. Haven't painted a single one yet, but I couldn't resist the Sutton Hoo look about them. I also picked up the FotR and MoM sets, but didn't go for RotK (don't like the full plate on the Gondor soldiers). I also haven't pursued any of the pricey models. |
photocrinch | 18 Sep 2009 9:44 a.m. PST |
Old Tom Meier Ral Partha fantasy figs. I grew up when these were fresh off the presses so to speak, but could never afford many of them. Now they are starting to take over my basement. I like his newer stuff as well. |
photocrinch | 18 Sep 2009 9:47 a.m. PST |
Parzival, I am making my Gondor army from the GW Numenorians. I didn't like the plate either, but the Numenorians are fantastic. I may buy some historical minis for the knights and just replace the shields and heads with the plastic GW ones to make them fit in. Of course I haven't painted any yet

I'm a long-time GM/DM first, and an army builder second. I was also the prime lead-head in my early groups, so a lot of my non-GW fantasy is concentrated around what it takes to run old-time D&D. Equipment (ie. "class") & race combos outside the old Gygax & Tolkien norms are always a draw (which led to a bunch of Chronopia Elves and Blackbloods in the collection). |
Happy Little Trees | 18 Sep 2009 10:03 a.m. PST |
The Dark Sword ranges of figures. They're just so nice. |
Tom Reed | 18 Sep 2009 10:05 a.m. PST |
Centaurs, Ral Partha, Grenadier, whatever I could get my hands on at the time. Originally for a fantasy wargaming campaign. I think I have thirty or so. |
Henrix | 18 Sep 2009 10:14 a.m. PST |
I have a very soft spot for Werner Klocke (ever since before I knew who he was – he had just made a figure for Warzone). Right now, Alkemy figures, some Otherworld. I used to collect the metal Confrontation minis. |
Huscarle | 18 Sep 2009 10:25 a.m. PST |
I'll echo Henrix choice of Werner Klocke, love his stuff. My other favourite sculptors are Bob Olley & Tom Meier. Love the Mithril figures, Freebooter, Reaper, Ral Partha, Foundry, Thunderbolt, Mirliton, Dark Sword, Bronze Age, etc. I also buy a few of the specials from CMON, & my latest orders were from Heresy & Avatars of War. I have 1000s of figures of which about 75% are unpainted :-( |
Pictors Studio | 18 Sep 2009 10:37 a.m. PST |
I really like the GW Ogre Kingdoms stuff. I think the sculpting is fantastic, the figures are proportioned just right and they really do make them look pretty beastly. They are some of my favourite fantasy figures on the market. One of the butchers is probably my favourite fantasy figure period. I'd love it if GW did them in 10mm as well. |

Ferrous Lands | 18 Sep 2009 10:50 a.m. PST |
I love the old Grenadier Fantasy Warriors line. I've been collecting all those Copplestone and Lund sculpts. I've also been filling my shelves with Vendel Miniature's catalog. |
TodCreasey | 18 Sep 2009 10:52 a.m. PST |
I have all of the Foundry Great Orcs as well as both Foundry Swashbucklers sets. They are currently at high risk for the sale pile as I never play with them these days but I may keep them in case my kids ever show an interest. |
Space Monkey | 18 Sep 2009 10:57 a.m. PST |
Old Grenadier gets me going
and the Minifigs Valley Of The Four Winds stuff when it pops up on Ebay. The Rackham metals really sucked me in, especially the Mid Nor
they work great as Chaos Dwarfs. Oh, and Werner Klocke for me too
|
mweaver | 18 Sep 2009 10:58 a.m. PST |
I am allllll over the place, in terms of subjects and manufacturers. Probably the thing we are most unable to pass by are interesting civilian figures. |
The Gray Ghost | 18 Sep 2009 11:09 a.m. PST |
I like My humans to look like they belong in a fantasy world so I pick up LoTR Easternlings, Eurekas Armies and Enemies of the Petal Throne and alot of the old Ral Partha sculpts. Plus anything dark elf. |
nycjadie | 18 Sep 2009 11:17 a.m. PST |
I'll go chronologically: I do like the AD&D Solid Gold line for nostalgia reasons. I buy the occasional Grenadier boxed set for the same reason. I like the old 1980's preslottabase Citadel orcs and have recreated an army with them. I'm also a fan of Bob Olley's work and love his samurai orcs and goblins. The Citadel LOTR ranges from both the 1980's and 2000's are great. I buy them on eBay when I can for a good price. The retail prices are a bit high for me. I bought a bunch of the Confrontation undead when they switched focus to plastics. Haven't painted them yet. I also own a bunch of Minifigs old fantasy ranges. Many still hold up today. Kev Adams and his Foundry orcs are great. I'd love to buy those boxed sets but even on sale they're something like $18 USD an orc. Way too much for me. |
Zinkala | 18 Sep 2009 11:20 a.m. PST |
For a long time I collected mainly GW as it was what we mostly played. Got lots of armies and minis of theirs. Now I'm playing Armies of Arcana and it really opened the flood gates for possibilites. Still have my GW armies but have bulked them out with characters and custom critters from all over. Plus I've started throwing historical armies that I've always been interested in into the mix. The main reason I never collected historicals before was that quite often I only wanted 1 army from a certain period and as my group d9idn't play anything historical it seemed a waste to collect 2 to make historical match up. Now anything goes and I'm doing mythology research to add fantasy elements to the historicals as well. My only criteria is that I like the looks of the available minis. |
Madzerker | 18 Sep 2009 11:21 a.m. PST |
Most stuff by Tre Manor. Anything that fits into my mythical Norse/Celtic world. Good 30mm hard sci fi. |
GreatScot72 | 18 Sep 2009 11:22 a.m. PST |
Reaper Dark Heaven and Warlord for fighters, magic users, and the undead (I love their undead). LOTR from GW-I have used many of the plastic troops for proxies in other games-both historical and fantasy. And until recently the plastics were a really great value. GW Warhammer Empire-I have no intersest whatsoever in WHFB, but their militia are among my favorite plastic figure sets of all time. The state troopers are also very nice. I will proxy them for historical and fantasy games as well. Jason |
Atomic Floozy | 18 Sep 2009 11:22 a.m. PST |
As far as style & sculptors, I'm all over the place as well. However, a good 80% of my collection is female. If the army or period/background doesn't include women, I won't collect it. |
DeanMoto | 18 Sep 2009 11:26 a.m. PST |
Would mythological be fantasy? I'm thinking my Minotaur, Hercules, Chiron (the centaur dude-horse), Medusa, etc. are more historical. Anyway, those are the kinds I have. Oh, and if the opportunity arises, I'll get some Japanese Oni, Bakemono & Kappa-Tengu stuff. Again, I'm thinking there closer to historical; at least historical folk believed in them. Dean |
Hexxenhammer | 18 Sep 2009 11:28 a.m. PST |
Right now I've got a thing for D&D style hobgoblins and bugbears. I'm trying to find more minis that fit with my hobgoblins to give them some variety. I've got 2 packs of these Reaper guys: link also the Chainmail hobgoblins: link picture I've also got what I think are two Ral Partha "great orcs" with heavy armor and spears that match up to the others pretty well. I'd like some more, but they don't seem to be on the Iron Wind site. But I'm open to other suggestions that might match. |

For Fantasy, Werner Klock's stuff. Even stuff I will never use. Other than that, whatever army has cought my fancy for the moment. |
shaloop | 18 Sep 2009 11:48 a.m. PST |
I've been buying a lot of GW's LotR range during the last year. Slowly putting together Last Alliance and Mordor armies. I've also been trying to resist Tom Meier's amazing Thunderbolt Mountain elves, but I think I'm going to finally order some. |
AppleMak | 18 Sep 2009 12:32 p.m. PST |
My favorite orcs ever, were the "Black Orc" range designed by Nick Lund. I think they captured the essence that these could have been real creatures, unlike the 'cartoony' types produced by many manufacturers. Of course, these are back in the 1980s! Not sure if I can still get any, maybe e-bay. But I am pretty much 100% historical right now |
Garand | 18 Sep 2009 12:35 p.m. PST |
I collect the old Grenadier Dragons-of-the-month series, both the original and II. Have about half of each range so far
Damon. |

Pumpkins ( jack O lanterns) Witches and Rats ( skaven, rat swarms etc etc ) . Probably cause of the b' day thing |

It varies: Almost everything I collect is for RP purposes (or because I just want to paint it), so I've got a little bit of everything from Art of War's Leonidas to a bunch of Warmachine minis. I really like the look of the Anima Tactics minis, too, so I have about 40 of them. |
Ron W DuBray | 18 Sep 2009 3:36 p.m. PST |
undead, orks, dwarfs, and Rats. but I have not added anything to them since 1999 |

Reaper for ogres, gnolls, dwarves, kobolds, elves, and many others Ral Partha for goblins Otherworld for kobolds |

Rats
.I was very much into Skaven in the 90s and collected pretty much every rat man figure then in production. Still have a soft spot for a good 'un. |

Licensed Middle Earth ranges, Heritage, Grenadier, old Citadel, Mithril ,Harlequin(BTD) and new GW. I have stopped in the last few years, the GW releases are too much to keep up with.Probably got 3 – 4 thousand miniatures packed away in crates sadly.I also bought a lot of miniatures I felt could proxy for races and humans in Middle Earth, especially before the GW ranges came out. Also bought board games and wargaming rules related to ME I also collect Arthurian ranges, both dark age and medieval, not gone for thunderbolt mountain yet, but one day
Currently Im more into VSF and my completist collecting habit seems to be kicking in. From GW with the exception of the ME I only collect Night Goblins and Dark Angels |

GW LotR humans. I'm a sucker for anything that even remotely looks Nordic/Viking. I think the Rohirrim are really nice figures. |

Lately I seem to be buying old Grenadier Fantasy Warriors and new Otherworld miniatures. Long-term there are lots of Reaper and Metal Magic/Mega Miniatures around here too. |
wolvermonkey | 18 Sep 2009 9:56 p.m. PST |
Really like the Chronopia Black Bloods. I know I'll never get to use them in a game of Chronopia but I hope to at least get them painted sometime. Oh, and the Reaper Warlord minis too. Necropolis, Darkspawn, and Reptus. |

Ratmen and Werner Klocke stuff -- except for dwarves and such. |
Ganesha Games | 19 Sep 2009 7:39 a.m. PST |
I have a lot of halflings/hobbits from many manufacturers, and over 500 superheroes (Heroclix, rebased and repainted/dipped). I have too many Horror figures from a lot of manufacturers, including an almost complete Horrorclix-commons collection and more zombies than I have space for. The fun (?) thing is that all my rulesets use about 5-10 figures maximum for the average game, so I wonder what I am going to do with those 120+ painted and based zombies

Lots of GW Warhammer FB miniatures – armies of each "nation" with a lot of Chronopia miniatures in there in places as well. Have been very happy using our own rules. Have a few Reapers in there, mostly Klocke's work as well as Bobby Jackson. Also a number of GameZone miniatures I imported long before they skyrocketed in price. Overall a solid GW base with an eclectic mix of other manufacturers leading to a world of endless possibilities. |
