I recently experimented with the magic wash (future floor polish) technique on some 1:48 scale Maisto humvees. They came painted flat tan, so I hit them with a light brown magic wash to good effect. Sorry no pictures just yet.

My first question is can I get the same effect using the new GW washes? Will they settle in the cracks the same way magic wash will?

My second question is, what would be a good color to wash my flat OD green humvess with? Should I use the same brown or go with a black wash instead?

Thanks in advance.

I guess my question is – Why do you care?

;-)

Sorry.

Captain Apathy17 Sep 2009 1:57 p.m. PST

Ba-dump-bump… he is here all week folks. try the veal.

… and when I said "thanks in advance" I wasn't talking to you Tony. ; )

I personally have a hard time getting the magic wash the right consistency. I use it with large projects like terrain, but use the GW washes for figures. They work exactly as I need every time.

Dave Gamer17 Sep 2009 2:35 p.m. PST

The GW Wash is less glossy than using Future. I'd stick with the Black (Badab Black) and the Dark Brown (Devlan Mud). The green, red, purple and blue are also OK for specialized uses. I found the Sepia and Ogryn Flesh not dark enough to be useful.

Dave Gamer17 Sep 2009 2:36 p.m. PST

PS – on the OD Humvees I'd go with the black.

Future floor wax is da bomb!

And way cheaper than anything that has GW printed on it.

Sorry, if I offend some, but the learning curve for Future floor wax is minimal. You do have to mix it up before use or the premixed solution will settle but otherwise it works fine every time.

Quid's right. Best tool for painters out there. Need any help give me a shout.

Thanks,

John

Amen, quidveritas. Preach it, brother.

John Leahy has been a tireless advocate of the technique, as well.

Me, I'm going into retirement on the subject. You can only explain so many times that you really can't Bleeped text up a Future wash, before the cries from those who can't make it work make you wonder about the Future of humanity.

Either you get it… or you can pay ridiculous amounts for brand name stuff. Bt that is why the brand names prosper.

Future is indeed the Nectar of the Gods. That said, it doesn't taste nearly as delicious as you'd expect. grin

I have used the future and it is good, but the recipe hiding somewhere in the TMP archives is even better!

lebooge17 Sep 2009 7:10 p.m. PST

For those new to the technique, didn't future recently undergo a re-labeling and possible reformulation? Does that make any difference in the utility of the stuff for miniatures?

FWIW I love the GW Devlan mud and have easily painted around 300 15mm figs with one bottle of the stuff and still have some left over.

I thought FUTURE® was a brand name?

It is.

Thanks,

Same great taste, just a new branding.

The base mix is equal parts Future and Water (50/50). Then you pour off a little of the base into a cup and add color. I used a very small amount of GW Brown Ink in my magic wash on my tan humvees and they turned out great.

For what it is worth, I tested the New GW Black Wash on an od green Hot Wheels car and while the color is good straight out of the pot, it doesn't seem to settle as well as the magic wash does.

Thanks to everyone for the input, except Tony. ; )

I will find some black ink and mix up a batch of magic wash for my green humvees.

Cheers.

I'm very impressed with G/W's new washes … I find Magic Wash not as useful or good as G/W's … And Magic washes can be shiny … which is easily correct … But I just don't like shiny …

I prefer GW washes – they let me touch up the results better afterwards, and I have better control over it.

Surferdude18 Sep 2009 4:49 a.m. PST

I prefer the GW ones (first GW stuff I have bought for years) and although not as cheap I don't need heaps of the stuff anyway … might be different if I was using it on big stuff. I used about a quarter of a the bottle on about 60 20mm US Grunts I did so can't complain.

You know i never had any luck with Future when I cut it with water. I use mine undiluted. Maybe should have used distilled water?

Thanks,

John

nycjadie18 Sep 2009 11:24 a.m. PST

What's your formula, John?

reddrabs18 Sep 2009 12:52 p.m. PST

Future floor wax is da almost impossible to get in the UK.

Lion in the Stars18 Sep 2009 1:29 p.m. PST

I've had issues with mixing Future with the GW washes (it actually *pooled*, instead of just hitting the cracks), but a friend of mine put about 60 drops of future into a full bottle and has been getting good results.

I'd also use the black wash for your OD Green HummVees, the green wash just doesn't look right.

Personally, I like the control I get with ink, water, and future, but for lazy painting (ie, don't have the stuff/time to custom mix) it's hard to beat the GW Washes.

reddrabs I found this, I think it was posted on TMP might be of some use

I use an old pickle jar and use a few drops per 3 or 4 ounces. It should have a milky opacque appearance when sloshed along the side the jar. A few drops of ink WILL go a long way! You can always add more. Too much ink use a water filled brush to quickly brush it off. No harm, no foul. The medium is superlative. I am firmly convinced that anyone who use Future properly would never go back to Minwax or its derivatives. Future, simply has too many advantages.

Thanks,

John

McWong7320 Sep 2009 5:51 a.m. PST

Future is also known as Pledge, at least in Australia.

I use both, but my preference is for the magic wash. 50/50 acrylic floor celaner (the Future/Pledge) with water. The I use FW Acrylic inks, either black or sepia. Has worked a treat, only tip I can think of for those who can't make it work is to use some of the blank or non inked mix to give you figures a light coat before you apply the wash, or GW ink for that matter. Smooths out the painted surfaces, prevents the ink adhering to the raised areas too much.

Steve W20 Sep 2009 3:04 p.m. PST

I had my first go here in Oz yesterday using Pledge ONE GO..The only inks I have a the mo are GW and found you needed quite a bit of ink to make it work.( these are the old GW inks, not the new washes)

Do you need less ink with artists inks, or am I doing someting wrong…

I like the results by the way

I use Higgins calligraphy ink.

Thanks,

John

Magic wash is pretty spectacular. For glazes and washes I just pour a few large drops of wash and add a tiny amount of paint. Far more satisfying and 'arty' to do that than pay massive amounts for branded products that don't offer any advantages.
