Soooo, I'm working painting up some generals, and realizing that I don't know what they looked like. Were they pale, ruddy, swarthy, etc? Did they have blond, black or brown hair?

I've been checking various places like wiki and sealed knot, and oddly, they usually don't describe these fellows! Also, there usually aren't color portraits.

Anyone have a good way to find this out?

Connard Sage16 Sep 2009 2:24 p.m. PST

At the risk of repeating myself, the Sealed Knot is not the first stop for historical research. The NPG and other collections are the obvious places.

Get the…ahem…picture? :)

Can someone quote me?

Height might be useful too,

Rupert was 6 foot 4 inches, while Charles I was 5 foot 3 inches, and became considerably shorter in 1649

;-)

Oh, on a slightly more useful note, there are pics of main commanders here -

So Sage….you're saying the Sealed Knot is NOT the first stop for historical research: :) I liked that "turn o' phrase"
lol

"Charles I was 5 foot 3 inches, and became considerably shorter in 1649"

that's just KNOT funny! hah! so wrong at so many different, ahem, "levels"

Ohhhhhh, bad.

At the moment, I just need the six generals in the Old Glory Parliamentary Personalities pack:

Cromwell – dark brown hair, pale skin
Skippon – Grey hair?
Manchester
Waller
Essex
Fairfax

Any additional info would be appreciated. The NPG didn't have pics of the Essex oil paintings, and he sat for many. Said for copyright purposes.

Even if the painting exists of your chosen general you can't always be sure of the likeness… those who could afford them sometimes expected to be flattered.

Google is your friend…. A few views of The Earl of Essex.

Oh and by all accounts Cromwell was ugly as sin.

The British Civil Wars link that Timbo W provided above has portraits of all six (and many other ECW commanders)

Only Skippon and Essex are not in colour. You could also try a Google image search, as Connard and Huw suggest.

Old Noll didn't subscribe to the school of flattery though – he asked to be painted 'warts and all'. He certainly was no oil painting ;o)

Can't link directly to the picture URL so scroll down a bit for the Pieter van der Faes 'warts and all' portrait.

"Oh and by all accounts Cromwell was ugly as sin."

I think he was more concerned with internal purity and righteousness than outward appearances. Perhaps that has a beauty of its own? After all, he had a ton of children, so it must have worked for his lady!

I'm mainly concerned with skin and hair color. The warts may be too hard to paint altho it'll be fun to try!
