Who games Roger's Rangers and does anyone produce any good 28mm miniatures for it?

A Twiningham15 Sep 2009 6:26 a.m. PST

Conquest jumps to mind (I love mine, superb sculpts), but I understand Galloping major have some in the works also.

AGamer15 Sep 2009 6:26 a.m. PST

I have some from Front Rank, Dixon and Conquest.

I like Front Rank and Conquest equally well, Dixon a notch below. Since they are all based individually, the size/style differences don't bother me.

Redoubt have a nice range as well.

Like everything else in my FIW, I use as many different figures and ranges as I can, even in the same "unit". They are skirmish figures, not Hessian grenadiers with a ramrod up their … spine.
So, I use Old Glory, Front Rank, Dixon, Hinchliffe, Perry Stockbridge Indians, and so on.

Even though I KNOW that riflemen were inherently unlikely, I designate ANY figures wearing a hunting shirt as riflemen. It's a handy way of telling them from the muslet men.

My Rangers are so nondescript and ununiformed that I use them happily for Butler's Rangers in the later war also.

I use WRG's Fire and Steel, giving each faction a possee of at most 10 figures. The rules are semi-comoplex, If you think such Sharpian oddities as tap loading are silly and ahistorical, ignore them. I use them, but prefer the term "hastily loaded". It features time out to reload, with rifles taking longer, opportunity fire, wounds, etc. It works to give the FEEL, if not 100% "accurate".

I have the Conqest Rangers, waiting to be painted. Very nice poses with lots of character. There is also a canoe w/Rangers available.

Although not a very good picture, here is one of the Conquest American Rangers painted as Major Roberts (the casting is the second from the left in pack FIW-002 in Goldwyrm's link, above), with his "fice" dog:

Jim, I really like the diorama aspect of that basing. I may borrow that idea if I ever get around to painting up my own. grin

John – Who produced the Perry Stockbridge Indians?

nycjadie15 Sep 2009 7:23 a.m. PST

Does anyone do Roger's Rangers in winter dress?

Steve, they are in the AWI range.

nycjadie15 Sep 2009 7:30 a.m. PST

Awesome, thanks Goldwyrm. Those are super nice.

aecurtis Fezian15 Sep 2009 7:39 a.m. PST

I don't see the connection with Indians…

I have Dixon's but agree that Front Rank are probably better

One of the kids who lived up on top of Dearborn's Hill, a quarter-mile from us--they had 21 people living in the house at one point, with Mom and Dad, twelve kids, one grandmother, the oldest kid's wife and baby, and I'm not sure anymore who the other four were--was way too smart for his own good. I remember one time he went into Portland, got drunk (as a minor), got picked up and spent the night in the pokey, and got out the next morning, arriving at high school without anyone knowing he'd been gone. He's one of the town selectmen now.

Anyway, he used to baffle Mr. Marcou, the physics teacher, by asking him "So how much did that Million-Dollar Bridge cost, anyway?"

Goldwyrm,

I really like the diorama aspect of that basing. I may borrow that idea if I ever get around to painting up my own.

It is an idea that I have borrowed from others. As far as I know, it's in the "public domain" so plagarize to your heart's content.

I recall a client of mine who is a real smart guy at one of the world's largest companies. He said that he really liked this attorney he was using at another firm but he could never manage a case well. It seems that the attorney was super smart and always had the right answers, but he just managed to burn through money and lose. So I asked the client how many questions the attorney asked him during their conversations. The client responded very few. I told him, beware of anyone who has only answers and no questions.

Do you really think that bridge cost only $1 USD million?

WarWizard15 Sep 2009 8:52 a.m. PST

I woudl recommend Redoubt or Sash and Saber 40mm.

zippyfusenet15 Sep 2009 8:54 a.m. PST

FWIW, that photo is not the Pery *Stockbridge* Indians, regardless what the caption says. These are the Perry Stockbridges. They have a very distinctive look what with thouse brimmed hats and bering double-armed:

Goldwyrm15 Sep 2009 9:05 a.m. PST

Correct. The picture I linked appears to actually be mislabeled on that website and is code AW31 "Warriors skirmishing with rifles and muskets" vs. AW33. They both can be looked up directly here.

Time to break out the old used copy of Northwest Passage for some inspiration…

aecurtis Fezian15 Sep 2009 12:22 p.m. PST

I hope not the fillum. Break out the well-worn copy of the novel, please.

rddfxx16 Sep 2009 6:54 a.m. PST

The novel it is, I don't like the movie much, since it misses the point re Langdon Towne and fails miserably to capture Roberts' finely nuanced Robert Rogers with that mail-it-in fine fuzzy fellow performance by Spencer Tracer.

rddfxx16 Sep 2009 6:59 a.m. PST

BTW, I always thought the second half of the novel is the best, about Towne's training and life as an artist in London, and the epiloque on Roger's search for the NW passage.

What is a "fice dog"?

spontoon04 Oct 2009 7:02 a.m. PST

Ah, yes! Robert Rogers. The gentleman who intorduced cannibalism to American armed forces. Do they still practice it, I wonder?

RAFM makes some very nice Roger's Rangers.

andygamer04 Oct 2009 8:53 a.m. PST

There is no cannibalism in the American armed forces. Let me repeat: There is no cannibalism in the American armed forces.

John the OFM! Drop that leg!!

Galloping Major will be releasing their first pack of rangers in a couple of weeks, with more to follow.

There are greens and a painted example up on the Studio page website now:
