Nickname was the "tin donkey". Maybe the Austro-Hungarian guys.

I believe the Germans were the only ones to field an aircraft that was 100% metal. The engines of the day made these aircraft liabilities poor performance and maneuver characteristics and very expensive to manufacture.

Junkers D-1. Not sure if the Allies had anything like that, though the Bristol M1C was a late war monoplane.

The Junkers was the first and only all metal aircraft to see active service in the Great War…. There are a couple of flying reproductions somewhere in England of the two seater ground attack version of the D1 given the designation CL1….although all is not what they seem they look bloody good to my eyes..

Hi

Prior to the D1 and CL1 there was a JI also an albatros J model, but the "all metal" isn't quite true.

You may find this article on Junkers interesting as far as Im aware no other manufacturer who produced a metal combat aircraft during WW1… Junkers built at least 3 types that saw service during, 2 two seaters(J1, CL1+ navy floatplane version) and a single seat fighter(D1)….
