I'm pondering the new wave of basing, seen both in Polemos and the upcoming Blucher rules, in which infantry battalions and cavalry regiments are based on rectanglar stands. While I am very interested in that level of modeling armies, I wonder if it might be more accurate to use bases that were more nearly square. A battalion in line might be a hundred yards wide in line, but could be nearly that deep when in column of companies at full distance. While square bases might prevent the stands from being utilized in other rules, as in the intention in both Polemos and Blucher, I think that deeper basing is the best way to duplicate brigade footprints. I'd be interested in hearing the opinions of this august body. Best regards

As I recall – Polemos can be played at 2 scales – units representing a battalion or units representing a regiment\brigade. When playing at the brigade level, the stands are 60mm square. At battalion level they're 60mmx30mm. So if you want to use your figures for both scales you mount them on the 60mmx30mm bases for the battalion level game and then put two of those bases together (front to back) to make a 60mm square for the brigade level game. I thought the upcoming Blucher rules used 2 bases to make 1 unit. |

Dave; Yes, both use square stands to represent brigades, but I would think that an inf battalion or cav regiment should have roughly a square sized footprint as well. Best
