In most rule sets for the ECW Scottish troops are considered "pike heavy", often with a 1:1 or 3:2 pike:shot ratio. Why is this? Given Scottish experiments with light artillery and their history of continental service, I would expect Scottish troops to be reasonably up-to-date in their thinking in these matters. |

Covenanters or Montrose Royalist? |

Oh, right! Sorry – I was thinking of the covenanters. Since Montrose's troops were living off what they could pillage and pick up, I imagine it's hard to know just what they had at any one time. But do we know that the government militias were issued more pikes than muskets or that "regular" troops who served (at various points) in England or the regiments at Dunbar were pike heavy? I realize that covers a lot of ground, but rule sets seem to characterize the Scots as pike heavy throughout the period. |

FWIW, a quick browse of three random sets of rules/lists came up with the following WRG 1420-1700: List 38; musket from 1 to 2 per pike (so 1m:1p/2m:1p) DBR army lists 2: List 19; Pikemen 4 per 6 shot (or 2p:3m) Forlorn Hope pp76-77 gives ratios of 2m:3p, 1:1 and 3:2 in 1644. p81 has 3m:2p in 1646 Hardly conclusive, but there you go |

For the same reason that Royalist regiments were pike heavy
muskets cost considerably more than pikes do |

Cost is always a consideration despite the armour and pike(which is already in stock so no additional cost) then money would need to be spent on muskets and powder and many units had no access to such funding. |

Tradition? In fact Gustavus Adolphus (according to some) was a pike promoter in his regiments. I also wonder if they expected to have to fight more cavalry? |
