When gaming with your genuine Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 figures, which rulesets do you use? Just the official 40K rules, or do you try non-GW rulesets too? |

All of my various armies went in the closet for 3rd edition: the shift in scale/perspective was too drastic
I pulled 'em all back out for 5150

Like many I love the minis but hate the rules. With 5150 and some fan-made conversions you have all you need for a good 40K experience. |

I mostly use 40K for them. Some of them pull double duty as big stompy monsters in big stompy monster games and some of them are used with Infinity now and again. Particularly the nids as I don't like the Gakis models. |

Chain Reaction/5150, and also some Beaky Space Marines were converted to Ant Space Men (replaced their former beaky head with Ant Head and gave them Ant Abdomens) to bedevil wy WW2 figures in 'NUTS' -- it turned out that Nazi rocket fuel was an Ant Man intoxicant, so they landed their saucer and ambushed a truck

Wh40k figs (and a few other random GW minis, I guess) have certainly cropped up in all our scifi games as well as in WARMACHINE. I've done or modified specific Wh40k conversions for Defiance: Vital Ground, VOID and Vor. |

Rogue Trader Space Hulk Advanced Space Crusade Previously 40k 2nd and (briefly) 3rd edition, but I don't think I'll ever be going back to either of them. So only with GW rules so far, but I've recently been thinking about running some very small-level scenarios in the 40k universe using one of Rattrap's sets (probably Fantastic Worlds). |

In the order of most played to least used (in the defence of the last 2, that's because I've only just acquired them): Stargrunt 2 Killzone (old set from Grenadier-UK) Space Hulk Kryomek Forge of War FAD4 To put it in perspective, I have never owned a set of 40K rules myself, and have never played a game of 40K (only played Warhammer Fantasy twice), but I have/had Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Terminators and Tau for various different game concepts, campaigns and battles. For example, the latter of those (the Tau) are currently serving as my elite Zhodani Consular Guard jump-troops, a suitably difficult enemy force for the players' units to avoid or defeat

5150 – gives a game that's closer to the fluff (ie. the way the battles in the short stories go). Less emphasis on army design and more focus on in-game tactics. ShockForce – for a more 'convention' feel. Army design and initial placement is more important to victory than in-game problem solving. |

Rogue Trader, Shockforce, and looking seriously at 5150. |
lugal hdan | 09 Sep 2009 7:54 a.m. PST |
Shockforce would be a great option for people who don't like 5150's reaction mechanism. IMHO Shockforce (or WarEngine as it's now called) is the game 40k wishes it could be. I prefer 5150 of course. 5150 plays like books and movies flow, and from what I've seen can get way closer to GW's fluff than their own game can in terms of what happens on the battle field. |

You ever tried to get someone to play with their 40K figs in a NON 40K game? Most of the players I know won't do it because the rules don't let them do what the can in the 40K rules. Makes for some difficult conversions! |
Scorpio | 09 Sep 2009 10:56 a.m. PST |
I've never had anyone complain about me using GW figs in a non-40k game. People really overplay those stereotypes. |
