I want to add 1809 Italian and 1812 Italian (15mm) units to my collection. Are the uniforms similar enough that I can paint units for "double" wargame duty? Some units may have changed a lot, but hopefully others did not. I've started reading and some sources are suggesting that many units marched off in 1812 in the uniforms of 1809 (newer French style uniforms not arriving until 1813).

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Dear Lest-

You are correct. In fact, some French units never received the 1812 Bardin-pattern uniforms.

In 15mm, the differences are small between 1806 & 1812 for the Kingdom of Italy. They did not carry eagles, but instead a prancing horse on the standard pole after 1812.

Dan:

Thanks for the info. I want to paint based for 1809 and then use the figures for 1812 scenarios also.

Dan Beattie,
Was the"prancing horse on the standard pole" for the Kingdom of Naples ? & not for the Kingdom of Italy.

Colbert -

Thanks for the correction. Indeed, the prancing horse is for Naples.

The Italian army never adopted the 1812 "Bardin" style uniform; they remained in the "old fashioned" uniforms until the end.

Also, they did carry Eagles, these being of a slightly different design from the French version.
