Hmmm… was that supposed to say "prowess"???
Anyway for your holiday enjoyment, another bit for AncientBattles.com

It ain't prowess, that's for sure!

Didn't know you'd have it up this soon! Better get you some pics of figures with some actual paint on 'em--and replace a couple of those squinky photos!

Thanks, Jeff!!!

Allen

JackWhite04 Sep 2009 4:35 p.m. PST

Beautiful Allen. A couple of those figures look almost human.

aecurtis Fezian04 Sep 2009 4:43 p.m. PST

Well, those are Jeff's work so far!!! I'm just working to match his style.

Allen

anleiher04 Sep 2009 4:47 p.m. PST

Another hidden talent, Allen. That's excellent work.

Sysiphus04 Sep 2009 4:48 p.m. PST

My gosh! Allen and I have the same two sets of pin vises….spooky.

JJartist04 Sep 2009 4:58 p.m. PST

Allen's comic book alter ego is "Pin Vise Man", criminals in Barstow are running scared.

Mithridates04 Sep 2009 5:10 p.m. PST

Always handy to have really useful blow by blow notes to use as a guide.

Your comments on the need to align hands and pikes reminds me of a job I have to do with some old Garrison pikemen – same problem with the body getting in the way!

Look forward to the next instalment.

Cheers

Garry

Whooo-eee!! The missus just lit into me for sending Jeff crappy pics (I've sent him better ones now)--and for not letting her proofread my text!!!

I'm not going to make that mistake again…

There, those are better. Thank you, Jeff!

Allen

oldbob04 Sep 2009 5:53 p.m. PST

I'm waiting… more please, and oh yes pictures too!

Thomas Whitten04 Sep 2009 6:01 p.m. PST

I like JJ's process better…..

Paint up a couple and the use a Jedi Mind Trick to get Allen to paint the rest.

aecurtis Fezian04 Sep 2009 6:08 p.m. PST

I wonder if that will work in reverse: "These are not the phalangites you are waiting for."

Excellent stuff! Looking forward to the rest of this!

Waco Joe04 Sep 2009 8:03 p.m. PST

Is it true in your younger days your modeling prowess included posing for Michelangelo?

grin

oldbob04 Sep 2009 8:35 p.m. PST

That phalanx Allen is working on is between 36 and 40 figures, what do they know we don't?

aecurtis Fezian04 Sep 2009 8:43 p.m. PST

Both Jeff's and mine will be 40 figures each, oldbob.

What does it mean? As my mentor Mr. Natural said:

picture

(No, Jeff is not secretly Mr. Natch!)

Nice article- it's useful to see all the stages in a project set out like that.

Allen is a model? I did not know that. Moonlighting to pay for his mini fix no doubt.

aecurtis Fezian05 Sep 2009 2:25 p.m. PST

Why do you think I used to attend all those lingerie trade shows?

JJartist05 Sep 2009 4:05 p.m. PST

I don't want to hear about the little old ladies painting my machimoi!

Plynkes06 Sep 2009 7:48 a.m. PST

It's funny, I had for some reason always pictured Allen as a tiny, laughing, blond-haired child.

Turns out he actually looks like Shelby Foote! :)

Allen, thanks for the articles. looking forword for more. Mike Adams

"I don't want to hear about the little old ladies painting my machimoi!"

They're not old. They're nice ladies, though, even though they're illegal immigrants.

oldbob06 Sep 2009 7:17 p.m. PST

Allen and "JJ" were kind enough to show us, their Ptolemaic Phalangite project. But on closer inspection, we didn't see and pikes, now we all know equipping 80 phalangites can be expensive, so I'm wondering if they will be cutting cost and using G.Cavenaugh's "House of Surplus Synthetic Weapons". Just a thought!

aecurtis Fezian07 Sep 2009 1:03 p.m. PST

The pikes shown, both on Jeff's painted samples, and the shot where I show that it is possible to align the holes and get pikes through on both variants, are supplied by 1st Corps. I'll be using 3/64" K&S brass rod when I get around to mine.

Allen

oldbob07 Sep 2009 1:58 p.m. PST

Oh no, their using Hi-tech state of the art pikes, I need to re-equip my troops. Oh yes some new greens on the "GB" site!

Allen, nice work and information again! Mike Adams

Allen

Very handy hints, given that I have many phalngites left to paint your suggestions are most timely. I look forward to seeing the finished unit.

Your ability to paint 'smaller' figures is really impressive!

I thought that turkey was off the menu – well maybe only in the big house.

Again thanks for the information! Since I had eye surgery I plan on painting some of my own figures and this helps alot! Mike Adams

Allen:

Great post on the process of painting the linothorax. It seems there's no real quick way to get these done.

I've never had a great experience with giving this type of armor a wash only. If I read your article right, it appears you also gave it a second coat of white to bring out the details.

Dean
