Hank Edley at Gorgon Studios sent me some samples of the new early Etruscans which Steve Saleh is sculpting for the company. I thought you might like to see them. First up are the Etruscan 1st Class hoplites; you may have already seen them painted beautifully by Dave Pauwels here: gorgon-studios.com/?cat=4 And here they are in bare metal, uncleaned: picture These are some of the 2d Class spearmen: picture And these are samples of the command packs--the two on the left are senior officers; the musician and standard bearer on the right will be in a future command pack, I believe: picture As I told Hank earlier today, I matched up these samples with some other similar figures and observed the following. The command figures are almost perfect matches in style and size to the Successors Steve has sculpted for Polemarch Miniatures. The 1st Class hoplites seem just a hair larger, perhaps like Steve's models for Foundry's "World of the Greeks" range. The 2d Class figures seemed a hair larger still with details more pronounced, again like the big Foundry figures. But then, for a chuckle, I put two of the Gorgon 2d Class spearmen alongside an Old Glory Etruscan officer: picture OK, so the officer's a short fellow. But the hands, feet, helmet and such match pretty well! I was surprised. I suspect the 2d Class figures will be a decent match overall for Aventine Miniatures' later Etruscans, too. These are nice clean castings. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the range when they're released: link Allen |

Nice looking miniatures Allen. Hank and Dave are 1st class (and I mean character-wise, not Etruscan military division-wise) individuals. Both have a real passion for this stuff. I can't wait for the line to be completed. All I need now is a WAB army list for these miniatures
;-) Dave

You think, Dave? Yep, it's been a pleasure talking with them about this range. They have a solid vision. Allen |

Nice-looking figures. Beautiful paint-jobs in the pictures at that first link. |

The new second class spearmen look very nice; it would be a happy bonus if they worked nicely alongside the Aventines! And great that all the figures go with Polemarch and WotGs. Simon |

Lovely figures, now all we need is an Early Rome WAB Supplement. |

Allen, Excellent review. I'll be getting some of these figures. Looking forward to cavalry and chariots, as well. Now if someone would get off of their duff at Forge World and produce the Rise of Rome supplement, I'd be a happy camper. |

Not going to happen, Pat. They rejected it as part of their review of ongoing projects. Now maybe if enough people wrote WHW and expressed an interest, they could get somebody knowledgeable like Gav Thorpe to write one. But it won't be me! Allen |

Allen, since we have digressed already, would you care to share your opinion of impetus/basic impetus handles the Etruscans if you have had a chance to look? |

I think the BI and beta Impetus lists look fine. I need to play it more! A problem with the Etruscans--similar to not knowing the mechanics of the Roman manipular formation--is that we don't really know how the different classes lined up and fought, at least not in detail. We're told that they existed, and we can draw some parallels, but as for historical exactitude to meet the needs of the "precise historical simulation" sort of gamer--we're not there. Allen |

As a long-time user of an Etruscan army I can witness to the fact they look great on the table (and I didn't have these nice looking figures to use when I painted mine.) Unfortunately at some point the battle has to begin and it all tends to go downhill from there
